Platform and Engine Renewed
The sixth-generation Polo, which underwent a full model change last summer in Europe, has finally arrived in Japan.
This renewal also sees the platform and engine updated. The platform adopts the "MQB," newly developed by Volkswagen Group for compact models.
The body size has increased to 4,060mm in length, 1,750mm in width, and 1,450mm in height, achieving a wider and lower stance. Notably, the wheelbase has been extended by 80mm to 2,550mm. This not only expands the cabin space but also contributes to a 71-liter increase in luggage capacity, now up to 351 liters.
The extended wheelbase, combined with shorter front and rear overhangs, further emphasizes the exterior's sporty character. Two lines on the bonnet add an accent, while the character lines running along the sides create a lower, sportier visual effect.
The engine has also been changed from the previous 1.2-liter 4-cylinder turbo to a 1.0-liter 3-cylinder turbo. However, it now boasts higher output, with a maximum power of 70kW (95ps) and a maximum torque of 175Nm (17.9kgm). It is paired with a 7-speed DSG transmission.
The interior features a horizontal dashboard and cockpit layout that is clearly visible to the driver. A distinctive design element is how the window line on the doors appears to seamlessly connect with the cockpit.
The Polo is equipped for the first time with the new generation "Discover Pro" infotainment system. Its 8-inch screen features center buttons and a dial. In addition to text input, voice commands are also supported, allowing users to easily find relevant information by simply entering queries like "Karuizawa lunch" as if searching the internet. The system can also provide real-time information on parking availability and fuel prices at nearby gas stations.
The safety equipment is also comparable to that found in the "Golf" and the "Passat" classes. It includes features such as the Pre-Crash brake system, and the adaptive cruise control is standard on the higher-trim Highline model.
The body is available in eight colors, including four new shades such as Energetic Orange Metallic and Leaf Blue Metallic.
Prices vary depending on the equipment: the entry-level Trendline starts at ¥2,098,000, the mid-range Comfortline at ¥2,299,000, and the top-tier Highline at ¥2,650,000.
