The Volkswagen "Passat 2.0 TDI" announced for introduction is a mid-size car (D-segment) equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine. It features an oxidation catalyst, urea selective catalytic reduction (SCR), and a diesel particulate filter (DPF) for exhaust gas aftertreatment, meeting Japan's stringent new long-term emissions regulations.

"TDI" is the collective term for Volkswagen's turbo diesel engine series. The Passat TDI, equipped with the latest TDI, is available in two models: a sedan and a station wagon.Passatboasts superior living space and comfort compared to its premium competitors, along with advanced driver-assistance systems and safety features for future autonomous driving, positioning it as the top-tier model in Volkswagen's domestic lineup. It already offers gasoline engines andplug-in hybrid (PHEV) modelshave been introduced, and a diesel model will now be added.

The reason cited for this introduction is the recent expansion of the diesel passenger car market in Japan (up 1.2 times year-on-year in the first half of this year), with imported cars offering a wide variety of diesel models drawing particular attention. This trend is attributed to a growing understanding of the benefits, such as economic efficiency (fuel costs), powerful performance, and environmental contributions (lower CO2 emissions), and a steady demand is anticipated going forward.

In conjunction with the decision to introduce the diesel model, the station wagon "Passat Variant TDI" will beTokyo Motor Show 2017exhibited as a reference.
