This year marks the fifth iteration of the "Lexus Design Award."“YET” – Meaning Paradoxical CoexistenceThe competition was held under the theme of “YET,” meaning paradoxical coexistence. A total of 1,152 entries were received from 63 countries worldwide. The judging panel, which included Paola Antonelli, Curator at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and architect Toyo Ito, selected the winning works.
12 Finalists and 4 Prototype Winners Selected in FebruaryThe prototype winners then created their works with guidance from mentors, who are world-renowned creators. The projects were exhibited at "LEXUS YET," marking Lexus's 10th participation in Milan Design Week (Salone del Mobile), where the Grand Prix winner was announced on the opening day.
Hiroto Yoshizoe's Grand Prix-winning work, "PIXEL," is a structure that creates various forms of light and shadow through the arrangement of countless light-blocking panels. Yoshizoe explains, "Through this device, one will realize that seemingly opposing elements are in fact intimately intertwined. Light and shadow, inside and outside, one and the other—the screen that exists between these dichotomies can serve as a device to both divide and transform, as well as to 'unite,' all phenomena."
In addition to "PIXEL," "LEXUS YET" features an installation by Neri Oxman, an associate professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and her research group,The Mediated Matter Groupas well as the unveiling of the "UX Concept" car, and a retrospective celebrating Lexus's 10th participation in Salone del Mobile.
A portion of "LEXUS YET" is also scheduled to be exhibited at "INTERSECT BY LEXUS-TOKYO" in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo, in May.
