Three Grades Offered with 1.4 TSI Engine
The newly announced Tiguan is equipped with a 1.4-liter TSI engine featuring BlueMotion Technology across all models. With cylinder deactivation (ACT) and an idling stop system, it achieves a fuel efficiency of 16.3 km/l, a 10% improvement over the previous generation. It is paired with a 6-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission.
The drivetrain is front-wheel drive only. The grades are based on the "TSI Comfortline," with the "TSI Highline" offering enhanced advanced equipment, and the "TSI R-Line" featuring exclusive interior and exterior styling, making for three distinct variations.
The new Tiguan is the first Volkswagen SUV to adopt the "MQB" modular platform, which was first introduced in the seventh-generation Golf. This flexible design offers numerous advantages, including weight reduction.
The body dimensions have been slightly increased. With a length of 4,500mm (+70mm compared to the previous model), a width of 1,840-1,860mm (+30-50mm), and a height of 1,675mm (+35mm), it is longer, wider, and lower than its predecessor. The wheelbase has also been extended by 70mm. This creates a stylish and sporty appearance while maximizing interior space. The luggage capacity has expanded to 615 liters, a significant increase from the previous model's 470 liters.
Its styling, dubbed "New Emotional Design," follows Volkswagen's traditional horizontal design language. Sharp, sculpted body lines and LED lighting at the front and rear create a sporty and dynamic form.
The interior is unified in black, exuding a sporty yet calm and elegant ambiance. Alternatively, saffron orange leather is available as an option.
Furthermore, the Highline and R-Line models come standard with the "Active Info Display," a fully digital instrument cluster. This replaces the traditional physical meter cluster with a 12.3-inch digital color display, first seen in the Passat GTE Advance. The central driver information display shows driving data, navigation, and driver assistance functions.

Enhanced Infotainment
The keyword for the new Tiguan is "Connected SUV," referring to its mobile online services via Volkswagen Car-Net. The genuine infotainment system with navigation, "Discover Pro," standard on Highline and above, offers telematics functions and Guide & Inform services, providing access to 12 types of information. It also supports Google Street View and Google Earth displays, and enables up-to-date facility searches using Google's online database.
Even the "Composition Media" genuine audio system on the Comfortline supports App-Connect, which uses three communication methods. This allows users to access smartphone apps via USB connection, regardless of their device (iPhone or Android).
The Tiguan also incorporates safety features based on Volkswagen's comprehensive safety concept, Volkswagen All-in Safety. It includes the Front Assist pre-crash braking system, which detects vehicles and pedestrians ahead to mitigate collision damage, and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Traffic Assist, which maintains a set distance from the vehicle ahead at all speeds and provides support in traffic jams.
According to Til Schar, President of Volkswagen Group Japan, the target user is "a married man aged 30 to 50 who enjoys weekends in the suburbs, with young children or as a DINKS couple."
He concluded by stating that the Tiguan "masterfully blends comfort and sportiness, technology and innovation, freedom and connectivity. It is a car that perfectly matches urban life while accompanying you on excursions to the countryside, offering the freedom to travel anywhere, a truly human-centric vehicle."
