New Platform Realizes Coupe-Like Design
The new LS, first unveiled in 1989 and now in its fifth generation, made its global debut. Both the body and engine are newly developed. This full model change results in a striking coupe-like silhouette.
The powertrain features a newly developed 3.5-liter twin-turbo engine, producing a maximum output of 310 kW (421 ps) and a peak torque of 600 Nm (61 kgm). Paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, it achieves a balance of acceleration and the quietness expected of the LS. The 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) acceleration is reported to be 4.5 seconds for the rear-wheel-drive model.
The platform is the newly developed rear-wheel-drive "GL-A" platform, shared with the large coupe LC, which enables a low-slung styling. To achieve its coupe-like silhouette, a "6-light cabin design" was adopted, featuring three window panes on each side.
The interior, meanwhile, creates a sense of spaciousness with a horizontal instrument panel and door trim at the top, while the lower section offers a feeling of security with thick, soft console armrests. To ensure comfort even on long journeys, detailed support adjustments for the pelvis, thighs, and back are provided, befitting a flagship model.
The rear seats also offer a luxurious space, with power seats featuring ottomans that allow occupants to adjust heating and refresh functions via a touch panel. These, along with ample legroom, are designed for ultimate relaxation.
In terms of safety, Pre-Collision Safety with automatic steering control has been introduced. It covers four critical accident scenarios—collisions with vehicles, pedestrians, lane departures, and intersection collisions—issuing early warnings. Based on camera and millimeter-wave radar information, it automatically applies the brakes, and if avoiding a collision solely through braking is difficult, it will automatically control steering to assist in avoiding pedestrian impact.
The body color range includes the new "Manganese Cluster," created using Lexus's unique painting technology. While pricing has not yet been determined, sales in Japan are anticipated in 2017.
