From Practical Wagon to a More Specialized Appearance
On June 7th, Daimler AG unveiled the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class Station Wagon to the world at the tennis ATP World Tour event "MercedesCup" held in Stuttgart, Germany. This marks the sixth generation of the model, counting from the 123 series that debuted in 1978 and remains highly popular as a classic car.
The most significant feature of the new E-Class Station Wagon is undoubtedly its styling. While most previous generations prioritized cargo capacity with a square, boxy form, the new model adopts a sleek silhouette, very similar to the C-Classstation wagon. The roofline gently slopes towards the rear, and the rear cabin is slightly tapered, imbuing it with a distinct specialty character beyond mere practicality.
According to Robert Lesnik, head of exterior design for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars, "This is a direct application of what Mercedes-Benz is currently advocating: 'Sensual Purity.'" For a station wagon, the term 'purity' also encompasses functionality. Meanwhile, 'sensual' pursues aspects that appeal to emotion.
That said, the luggage capacity is 670 liters in standard configuration and 1,820 liters when the rear seats are folded and loaded to the roofline. This is actually smaller than the current model's 695 liters and 1,950 liters, respectively. Nevertheless, Mercedes claims it still offers one of the largest spaces in its class, exceeding rivals like the Audi A6 Avantand BMW 5 Series Touring.

High-Rigidity Body, Only 100kg Heavier Than the Sedan
Of course, a wagon cannot be judged on capacity alone. In terms of usability, the rear seatbacks, which split 40:20:40, can be folded down using switches near the tailgate for the left and right sections. Their angle can also be adjusted individually; setting them more upright can increase the maximum cargo capacity by about 30 liters.
The tailgate is power-operated, with an optional hands-free access feature allowing it to open and close with a foot gesture. A foldable third-row child seat is also available. However, its introduction to Japan seems unlikely.
Rear air suspension is standard equipment, maintaining a level ride height front and rear even with loads up to 745 kg. This also proves beneficial when towing. We hope to see the availability of a trailer hitch, which has not been offered in Japan before.
As a station wagon with a large opening in the body, the vehicle's weight has increased by approximately 100 kg. This is due to reinforcements around the C and D pillars, as well as additional structural bracing added beneath the rear floor. This high-rigidity body, along with thorough sealing and added sound insulation in the rear seat area and wheel arches, also contributes to improved quietness. In fact, the development team proudly stated, "Despite the aerodynamically disadvantageous wagon body, we have achieved a level of quietness virtually indistinguishable from the sedan."
Furthermore, for those who desire even more refinement, an Acoustic Comfort Package is available. This includes front and side windows with acoustic film, additional sound insulation in the rear footwells and center tunnel, and heat-insulating glass.
In other respects, it is fundamentally based on the new E-Class Sedan, scheduled for launch this summer. In Europe, four gasoline and three diesel engines will be initially offered. The top gasoline model will be the Mercedes-AMG E 43 4MATIC, an entry-level "43" series model from AMG, powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine from Mercedes.
Sales in Europe will begin this autumn. In Japan, the launch is expected by the end of the year at the earliest, likely in early next year.
