A Four-Cylinder Turbo That Rivals Six-Cylinder Engines
The significantly revised new model of Porsche's mid-engined open-top sports car, the "Boxster," has made its Japanese debut. Its most notable feature is the switch from a naturally aspirated flat-six engine to a turbocharged flat-four engine. To signify that this change is more than just downsizing, the name has been changed to the718 Boxster"718 Boxster." This name is derived from the legendary Porsche "718" that was active in the racing scene from the 1950s to the 1960s and also featured a mid-mounted flat-four engine.
Two powertrain options are available: a 2.0-liter engine for the Boxster and a 2.5-liter engine for the Boxster S. The new engines deliver a maximum output of 300 ps at 6,500 rpm and a peak torque of 380 Nm between 1,950 and 4,500 rpm for the Boxster. The Boxster S boasts a maximum output of 350 ps at 6,500 rpm and a peak torque of 420 Nm between 1,900 and 4,500 rpm.
Both models offer a 35 ps power increase along with a 13 percent improvement in fuel efficiency. Furthermore, the Boxster S not only features enhanced power but also incorporates a turbocharger with Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG), previously exclusive to the911 Turbo"911 Turbo." This allows the benefits of both large and small turbochargers to be realized within a single unit. Transmissions offered are the same as before: a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed PDK. The most impressive performance comes from the PDK-equipped Boxster S with the Chrono Package, achieving 0-100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds – a 0.6-second improvement over the previous Boxster S with the same specification.
The chassis has also been tuned for sportier performance to match the more powerful new powertrain, with a 10 percent quicker steering ratio for the electric power steering. This combination ensures agile and superior handling, suitable for both daily driving and track use. For enthusiasts seeking an even more focused driving experience, an optional PASM sports chassis is available, featuring a lower ride height and stiffer suspension.

Aggressive Design at the Rear
While the exterior retains the general feel of the previous model, the design has been completely revamped. Only the front hood, windshield, and soft top are carried over. The overall impression is one of sharpened lines and a more powerful proportion.
The front fascia features enlarged air intakes and revised headlight units, giving it a more assertive look. Looking at the side profile, you'll notice the stylish door mirrors with V-shaped stays. The door panels themselves have also been redesigned.
However, it might be the rear styling that most strongly defines the character of the 718 Boxster. It adopts new combination lamps with clear taillights and four-point brake lights. A blacked-out accent line connecting the left and right taillights creates an aggressive aura distinct from the previous model.
Inside, the dashboard has been redesigned to accommodate the standard-fit Porsche Communication Management (PCM) infotainment system. PCM includes navigation and audio functions and also supports connectivity. With the optional Connect Plus package, network functions such as online navigation, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and Apple CarPlay can be enhanced.
With the introduction of the 718 series, the positioning of the Boxster and theCayman"Cayman" has been reversed. The open-top 718 Boxster is now positioned as a higher-tier model than the 718 Cayman, with a corresponding price increase. Many fans may lament that the Boxster, with its significant revisions, is no longer the indulgent entry-level Porsche that offered both open-air freedom and sporty performance.
