Extended Wheelbase Creates a More Usable Space

The compact minivan, first unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show last March, theGolf Touran"Touran" in Europe, has finally arrived in Japan.

The new Touran's most significant feature is its adoption of Volkswagen's latest production method, "MQB." While the overall width has increased by 35mm to 1,830mm, the length has been extended by 130mm to 4,535mm, resulting in a sleeker overall proportion. The wheelbase has also grown by 110mm, expanding the interior space and allowing for more versatile seat arrangements. Notably, the luggage space offers up to 917 liters with the third-row seats folded in a 5-seater configuration, and a cavernous 1,857 liters when the second-row seats are also folded flat, making it significantly more practical.

The engine is a 1.4-liter inline four-cylinder turbo, producing a maximum output of 110kW (150ps) and a peak torque of 250Nm (25.5kg). It is paired with a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission. Fuel economy isprevious modelimproved by 23 percent from 15.0km/ℓ to 18.5km/ℓ.

The infotainment system is also the latest generation, featuring "App-Connect," which supports Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto, enabling smartphone connectivity. Apps can be operated via the car's touchscreen. For iPhones, this includes basic navigation functions from Apple Maps, SMS usage, and Siri voice control.

Safety features are also comprehensive. Standard equipment includes whiplash-reducing headrests for the front seats, three-point seatbelts for all seats, a "Pre-crash brake system" to support collision avoidance, and a driver fatigue detection system. Furthermore, adaptive cruise control "ACC" and lane-keeping assist "Lane Assist" are standard on the top-tier "Highline" grade, and available as an option on the mid-range "Comfortline" grade.
