Lighter, Faster, and More Ecological
Freshly debuted at the 2012 Detroit Motor Show,SL-Classthe SL63 AMG is already making its appearance. The engine is a 5.5-liter V8, codenamed "M157," also found in the CL-Class and S-Class. Through technologies such as direct injection, twin-turbochargers with water-cooled intercoolers, and intelligent alternator control, this unit achieves enhanced performance alongside greater efficiency.
In its standard configuration, the new SL63 AMG delivers a maximum output of 395 kW (5,500 rpm) and peak torque of 800 Nm (2,000-4,500 rpm). With the optional AMG Performance Package, these figures increase to 415 kW (5,500 rpm) and 900 Nm (2,250-3,750 rpm).
Furthermore,SLS AMGlike the SLS AMG, the body shell is constructed entirely of aluminum, resulting in a 110 kg weight reduction compared to the previous generation. The suspension also extensively utilizes aluminum, bringing the total vehicle weight down to 1845 kg, a decrease of 125 kg from its predecessor, while simultaneously enhancing rigidity.
The 0-100 km/h sprint takes 4.3 seconds in standard trim, or 4.2 seconds with the AMG Performance Package. The 0-200 km/h times are 12.9 and 12.6 seconds, respectively. CO2 emissions are rated at 231 g/km, a reduction of approximately 30 percent compared to the previous generation's 328 g/km. When the C mode is selected, the engine's start-stop function is activated. While the top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, the AMG Performance Package allows for a top speed of 300 km/h.
The braking system features 390x36mm discs at the front and 360x26mm discs at the rear, with an optional ceramic compound brake system, similar to the SLS AMG, also available. Lightweight wheels in titanium grey or matte black are fitted with 255/35R-19 tires at the front and 285/30R-20 tires at the rear.
A Special Edition Also Debuts
Externally, the changes from the new SL-Class are not drastic. The larger air intakes in the front bumper, the rear diffuser, and the four-pipe exhaust system are the most notable distinctions.
Inside, the seats are Nappa leather sport seats, available in single or two-tone colors, with an AMG logo embossed on the backrest. The clock is an IWC analog timepiece.
A special edition, dubbed "Edition 1," is also being launched concurrently. In addition to the AMG Performance Package features, the "Edition 1" includes matte black lightweight alloy wheels, Designo leather seats in red or white, a black Designo leather headliner, a Harman Kardon 7-speaker audio system, the "Airscarf" neck heater integrated into the headrests, and the "Magic Sky Control" electrochromic glass roof, which changes tint, as standard equipment.
Pricing in Germany starts at €157,675. The AMG Performance Package adds €4,280, and the Edition 1 is priced at €189,269.50.
