C-Class First 9-Speed Automatic Transmission Equipped
Mercedes-Benz, which introduced its first clean diesel model in Japan, the E-Class, in 2006 and is approaching its 10th anniversary, has also equipped itsE-Classmodels, including theG-Classand GL-Class, with this technology. Now, it is finally being added to the C-Class as well.
While clean diesel engine approaches vary among automakers, the C-Class model employs a technology called "BlueTEC" by Mercedes-Benz. This system injects a urea solution called "AdBlue" into the exhaust gas, chemically reducing harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) significantly.
The 2.2-liter inline-4 diesel engine features a latest-generation common rail system with piezo injectors and a two-stage turbocharger. The latter controls exhaust flow to two turbochargers of different sizes using a variable flap, eliminating turbo lag and delivering necessary boost. This setup achieves a powerful performance with a maximum output of 170 ps and a peak torque of 400 Nm.
Furthermore, the transmission is a 9-speed automatic, a first for the C-Class. Mercedes-Benz claims this combination achieves both quietness and fuel efficiency, with an JC08 mode fuel economy of 20.3 km/ℓ.
The C-Class clean diesel models are available in four variants: two sedans and two station wagons. The sedan "C 220 d AVANTGARDE" is priced at 5.59 million yen. The station wagon lineup includes the "C 220 d Stationwagon AVANTGARDE" (5.95 million yen), the sporty "C 220 d Stationwagon SPORT" (6.41 million yen), and the "C 220 d Stationwagon SPORT (Leather Specification)" (6.79 million yen).
