The E-Class Embraces Hybridization!
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class, a paragon of luxury business sedans, is set to welcome two new hybrid variants: the "E300 BlueTEC HYBRID" and the "E400 HYBRID." These models were revealed in conjunction with their exhibition at the Detroit Motor Show. Leveraging the company's modular hybrid system, Mercedes-Benz has achieved hybridization without compromising the E-Class's signature spacious interior and generous trunk capacity. Both models feature start-stop functionality, regenerative braking, a boost function, all-electric driving capability, and a "sailing" mode that maintains cruising speed using the electric motor while the internal combustion engine is off.
The E300 BlueTEC HYBRID: Tailored for Europe
The E300 BlueTEC HYBRID is designed with the European market in mind.
Scheduled for release as both a sedan and a station wagon, it will be equipped with a four-cylinder diesel engine delivering a maximum output of 150 kW (204 hp) and 500 Nm of torque, paired with an electric motor producing 20 kW (27 hp) and 250 Nm. Notably, its fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions are 15 percent better than the 250 CDI, achieving 4.2 L/100 km and 109 g/km respectively. Mercedes-Benz claims it to be the world's most economical luxury car.
The E400 HYBRID: Developed for the American Market
Meanwhile, the E400 HYBRID is conceived for the American market.
It features a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine producing 225 kW (306 hp) and 370 Nm of torque, along with the same electric motor found in the E300 BlueTEC HYBRID. It achieves a combined fuel economy of 27 mpg (city), 31 mpg (highway), and 27 mpg (combined) under the U.S. CAFE standards.
Ambitious Hybrid Offensive
With the successful hybridization of the E-Class, Mercedes-Benz intends to continue its hybrid offensive. The driving force behind this strategy is its modular hybrid system, which, when combined with existing engine technologies, allows for straightforward hybridization across other model classes.
While the E300 BlueTEC HYBRID will launch in Europe and the E400 HYBRID in America, both are slated for introduction in the Japanese and Chinese markets as well.
