The 911 Finally Goes Turbo

At the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2011,The seventh-generation 911 (Type 991) Debutshas been refreshed for the first time in four years.

The highlight of this minor change is undoubtedly the new turbocharged power unit. Replacing the previous naturally aspirated engines in the new 911 "Carrera" and "Carrera S" are twin-turbo engines, both with a displacement of 3 liters. Despite a significant downsizing, the maximum output has been increased by 20 hp (15 kW) compared to the previous generation, reaching 370 hp (272 kW) for the Carrera and 420 hp (309 kW) for the Carrera S.

Maximum torque has also increased by 60 Nm for both models compared to their predecessors, reaching 450 Nm and 500 Nm respectively, available from a low 1,700 rpm up to 5,000 rpm. The maximum engine speed is set at 7,500 rpm, enabling high-revving performance unlike previous turbo engines, all while delivering Porsche's signature engine sound.

Furthermore, the 0-100 km/h acceleration time for the Carrera equipped with the PDK (dual-clutch) transmission and the "Sport Chrono Package" is now 4.2 seconds, 0.2 seconds faster than the previous model. The Carrera S, with the same specifications, achieves 3.9 seconds (also a 0.2-second reduction). Top speed for the Carrera is 295 km/h, an increase of 6 km/h. The 911 Carrera S records a top speed of 306 km/h, an increase of 4 km/h.

It goes without saying that Porsche's choice of turbo units for the new 911 aims to balance increased power with reduced fuel consumption. The new generation engine, reportedly 12 percent more efficient than its predecessor, achieves 7.4 l/100km (approx. 13.5 km/l) for the PDK-equipped 911 Carrera and 7.7 l/100km (approx. 13 km/l) for the PDK-equipped 911 Carrera S.

PASM Now Standard Equipment

The aforementioned Sport Chrono Package is a classic Porsche option for enhancing the 911's sportiness. In the new model, a rotary switch, derived from the hybrid mode switch in the 918 Spyder, has been newly added to the steering wheel.

Four driving modes are available: "Normal," "Sport," "Sport Plus," and "Individual." Furthermore, for PDK-equipped vehicles, a "Sport Response button" is integrated into the mode switch. Pressing this button sharpens the engine management and selects the optimal gear, allowing for maximum acceleration for up to 20 seconds.

Additionally, another classic optional feature, the "Porsche Active Suspension Management system (PASM)" electronic damping control system, is now standard on all 911 Carrera models with this update. The redesigned PASM, featuring a 10mm lower ride height and new-generation shock absorbers, achieves a high level of balance between everyday comfort and circuit stability, further improving driving dynamics.

Meanwhile, a new optional feature is the "active rear-axle steering," previously exclusive to limited models like the "911 Turbo" and "911 GT3," which can now be fitted to the 911 Carrera S. This not only enhances cornering performance but also provides high driving stability during lane changes at high speeds. By reducing the minimum turning radius by 0.5 meters, it also contributes to improved maneuverability in urban environments.

The infotainment system has also been renewed in this new 911. The newly developed "Porsche Communication Management system (PCM)," featuring online navigation and voice control, boasts a 7-inch multi-touch display, enabling smartphone-like operability. Handwriting input is also supported, and Wi-Fi allows connection with mobile phones and smartphones. In addition to "Google Earth" and "Google Street View," connecting an iPhone to the PCM now enables the use of Apple's "CarPlay."

Pricing is set at 12.44 million yen for the 911 Carrera (7-speed manual) / 13.091 million yen (7-speed PDK), 15.1 million yen for the 911 Carrera Cabriolet (7-speed PDK), 15.191 million yen for the 911 Carrera S (7-speed manual) / 15.841 million yen (7-speed PDK), and 18.13 million yen for the 911 Carrera S Cabriolet (7-speed PDK).
