Roof Changes in Three Ways

Entering its Third GenerationSmart ForTwoThe open-top "Cabrio" model, similar to the previous generation, will be available.

The new Smart Cabrio retains the ultra-compact size of its predecessor, measuring 2.69 meters long, 1.66 meters wide, and 1.55 meters high. The exterior design follows the "FUN.ctional" concept introduced with the ForTwo Coupe and Forfour, which balances functionality with enjoyment. It features a honeycomb grille with a fade effect, a charming silhouette with abundant curves, and design elements that emphasize the traditional Smart Tridion safety cell.

What differs from the previous generation is that even when the soft top is open,Fiat "500C"andCitroen "DS3 Cabrio"the upper part of the side windows remains as a roof bar. Furthermore, unlike these models, the roof bars can be manually removed for a completely open experience. The two removed bars can be stored in the tailgate.

The soft top, named "tritop" for its three modes—closed, a panoramic sunroof with the roof bars, and fully open—can be operated by a motor in 12 seconds. It can be opened or closed even while driving at maximum speed. Additionally, it features an open function via a three-button remote key from outside the vehicle.

The 20mm thick roof consists of an acrylic fiber outer layer, a rubber core, and an interior of polyester and cotton blend. The integrated rear window is made of glass with a defogger function, eliminating concerns about clouding due to aging, unlike plastic.

Even as the smallest car in Daimler's lineup, the Smart undergoes rigorous durability testing for its roof mechanism, equivalent to that of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet also being unveiled in Frankfurt. Furthermore, to prevent direct wind from hitting occupants, sensors were placed on a female dummy named Tanja, and meticulous testing and adjustments were conducted in a wind tunnel.

Rigidity Ensured Through Underfloor Reinforcement

To provide body rigidity to the Cabrio, which has a larger opening than the coupe, reinforcement materials have been added to the underbody, and the latest materials such as hot-formed ultra-high-strength steel sheets are used for the A-pillars. As a result, torsional rigidity has improved by 15% compared to the previous generation.

At launch, powertrains will include a 1.0-liter inline-3 engine producing 52 kW (71 hp) and 91 Nm of torque, or a 0.9-liter inline-3 turbo engine producing 66 kW (90 hp) and 135 Nm of torque, paired with either a 5-speed manual or a dual-clutch transmission called twinamic. Fuel economy is 4.2-4.3 L/100km (approximately 23.8-23.3 km/L).

Three trim levels are available: "Passion," "Prime," and "Proxy." Customers can customize their Smart ForTwo Cabrio with a wide range of safety features, convenient functions, and design options.

Standard safety features include the latest generation ESP and Crosswind Assist to prevent swaying due to side winds. Optional features include Forward Collision Warning and Lane Keeping Assist. For infotainment, there are functions that can connect with smartphones, and for styling, packages that lower the ride height and feature black wheel arches for a sporty look are available.
