All Volvo V40 Models Feature New Generation Drive-E Engines

Volvo's hatchback model,V40", and its SUV-styled sibling, the "V40 Cross Country", now feature the new "T3" grade, powered by a 1.5-liter inline 3-cylinder turbo engine.

The new T3 grade replaces the "T4," which has served as the entry-level model since the current V40's debut in 2013.Debut of the current V40It produces a maximum output of 112 kW (152 ps) at 5,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 250 Nm (25.5 kgm) between 1,700 and 4,000 rpm. While its output is 18 ps lower than the T4, its torque is increased by 10 Nm. It is paired with a newly developed 6-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel economy is rated at 16.5 km/L for the "V40 T3" and 16.0 km/L for the "V40 Cross Country T3." Both models are certified for eco-car tax reductions, qualifying for a 40% reduction in acquisition tax and a 25% reduction in weight tax, as well as a 50% reduction in the following year's automobile tax.

This engine is part of Volvo's new generation powertrain, "Drive-E," which the company is actively introducing. With this addition, all V40 and V40 Cross Country models sold in Japan are now equipped with Drive-E engines.

Naturally, even as entry-level models, they come standard with 10 advanced safety and driver-assistance features, including full auto brake for collision avoidance and mitigation with pedestrian and cyclist detection, and adaptive cruise control with full-speed range.

Pricing starts at 3.24 million yen for the V40 T3 and 3.74 million yen for the V40 T3 SE. The V40 Cross Country T3 is priced at 3.39 million yen, and the V40 Cross Country T3 SE at 4.14 million yen. Sales commenced on August 19th for all models.
