Exterior Design: Clean and Sporty
Volkswagenunveiled "The Beetle" at the Shanghai Auto Show in April 2011.
This new model retains the iconic rounded design that has continued since the "Type 1" manufactured from the 1930s, while adding further driving enjoyment and practicality to the second-generation "New Beetle."
Regarding the design of The Beetle, Klaus Bischoff, who supervised it along with Walter de Silva, Volkswagen Group Design Director, stated, "The Beetle boasts an exterior design that is both clean and sporty. Compared to previous models, the increased width, longer hood, and the windshield designed to extend rearward allow for enhanced aerodynamics."
Luggage Space Increased by Approximately 100 Liters
The exterior design is based on the "Ragster Concept," unveiled in Detroit in 2005, which was rumored at the time to be the next-generation Beetle. That concept featured a lower ride height of 150mm and racing bucket seats, with the concept of "more dynamic and muscular." Looking at the dimensions of The Beetle, the body size is 4,278mm in length (+152mm), 1,808mm in width (+84mm), and 1,486mm in height (-12mm). While the height has decreased, the length and width have significantly increased. This is a result of ergonomic design to ensure practicality and comfort, such as increased luggage space. The New Beetle had a luggage capacity of 209 liters, while The Beetle boasts a significantly larger 310 liters.
Scheduled for Release in Asia in February 2012!
Launch timing is set for September or October 2011 in North America, October in Germany, November across Europe (with right-hand drive models in January 2012), and February 2012 in Asia. The lineup will consist of three distinct models: "Beetle," "Design," and "Sport," differing in interior design and features.
Furthermore, for the European and American markets, a turbo model will be added, equipped with a 2.0-liter TSI engine, "Tornado" alloy wheels reminiscent of a whirlwind, and side sills engraved with the word "turbo."
For further details on the standard lineup, please refer to the article from the Shanghai Auto Show.
