Polo GTI: Significant Torque Increase with MT Only
Volkswagen's MT models, returning to the Japanese market for the first time in six years, will be available for the sporty hatchback models "Polo GTI," "Golf GTI," and "Golf R." All will feature Volkswagen's unique 6-speed manual transmission with a three-shaft structure.
This gearbox has a three-shaft configuration: one input shaft and two output shafts, one handling gears 1-4 and the other handling gears 5-6 and reverse. It was developed specifically for front-wheel-drive vehicles where the engine, transmission, and ancillaries must be compactly packaged at the front. The dual-clutch transmission "DSG," now standard on many Volkswagen models, is an evolution of this gearbox, featuring two input and two output shafts.
The "Polo GTI" MT model features not only a revised transmission but also altered engine characteristics. While the maximum output remains the same at 141kW (192ps) as the 7-speed DSG, the peak power band is now available across a wider range, from 4,300rpm to 6,200rpm, a reduction of 1,100rpm from the previous model. Furthermore, the maximum torque has been significantly increased from 250Nm to 320Nm.
Additionally, it comes standard with the "Performance Kit with Sport Select Chassis," allowing drivers to adjust the suspension settings to their preference. A button on the center console enables switching between "Sport" and "Normal" modes, altering the shock absorber damping characteristics, steering feel, and engine sound.
Deliveries for the Polo GTI MT model are scheduled to begin in September, with a price of 3,275,000 yen, making it 67,000 yen less expensive than the 7-speed DSG version.
The "Golf GTI" remains unchanged from the previous 6-speed DSG model, featuring an engine that produces a maximum output of 220ps and a peak torque of 350Nm. The adaptive chassis control "DCC" is available as an option for the MT model as well. Deliveries for the Golf GTI MT model are expected to start in October, with a price of 3,890,000 yen.
The "Golf R" also features an unchanged engine delivering a maximum output of 280ps and peak torque of 380Nm, along with R-specific sports suspension. Deliveries are scheduled to commence in September, with a price of 5,390,000 yen, slightly less than the 6-speed DSG version. In addition, Tornado Red and Limestones Grey Metallic have been added as new color options for both the 6-speed DSG and 6-speed MT models, bringing the total color choices to six.
All three models will be available in right-hand drive, mirroring the DSG versions.
