Developing a Machine for the Comeback. The Potential of Hybrids
It has been 13 years since Lauren Aiello, Stéphane Ortelli, and Allan McNish achieved overall victory in 1998 with the "911 GT1" in their last participation. Porsche, with 16 overall wins to its name, is finally returning to the "LMP1" class of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the pinnacle of endurance racing.
Porsche first secured an overall victory in 1970 with the legendary "917 short-tail." More recently, Porsche competed in the "LMP2" class of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a category for prototype cars, achieving back-to-back wins in 2008 and 2009 with the RS Spyder. Furthermore, to improve performance and reduce fuel consumption, they recently introducedthe "911 GT3 R" equipped with a hybrid system, demonstrating that their passion for racing remains unwavering.
Helmut Krüger, head of the motorsport division, commented, "The most challenging development in Porsche's history is ready. We will now conduct more specific evaluations of various concepts to aid in the development of a new racing machine. Everything depends on the regulations to be adopted from 2014. What is interesting is that Porsche's hybrid technology could potentially be a strong option." He also alluded to the possibility of developing a machine utilizing hybrid technology.
Porsche aims for its 17th overall victory with its return to racing. While the 24 Hours of Le Mans has recently been dominated by Audi and Peugeot, Porsche's comeback is expected to bring new excitement and challenges.
