Since its concept model was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2010, the 918 Spyder has garnered significant attention in markets worldwide. Development of the production model progressed, and its sale was decided in March 2011. Now, it has been announced that pre-orders will soon commence at authorized Porsche dealerships in Japan.

The 918 Spyder will be produced in a limited run of 918 units, with production scheduled to begin at the Zuffenhausen plant in Stuttgart on September 18, 2013.

This two-seater features a carbon fiber reinforced plastic monocoque body, similar to the concept model, but the production version is equipped with a manual roof system.

The powertrain features an innovative plug-in hybrid system. The engine, a mid-mounted 4-liter-plus V8 producing over 368kW (500ps), has proven its efficiency through numerous titles in North America's American Le Mans Series (ALMS), Europe's Le Mans Series (LMS), the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and Michelin Green X Challenge awards. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a 7-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK). Furthermore, electric motors are mounted on both the front and rear axles, enabling a variable all-wheel-drive system that independently controls the drive force of each axle. These electric motors generate a combined output of over 160kW (218ps). The car accelerates from 0-100 km/h in under 3.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 320 km/h.

The battery is a water-cooled lithium-ion unit, rechargeable from a standard household outlet. While charging times vary by country's power grid, it can be fully charged in approximately 3 hours in Germany. The car also supports zero-emission driving, capable of traveling over 25 km on electric power alone at a maximum speed of 150 km/h.

Fuel consumption is an astonishing 3.0ℓ/100km (33.3 km/ℓ) with CO2 emissions of 70g/km, measured under the European NEDC combined cycle.

The price is 684,800 Euros (approximately 82.5 million yen), with deliveries scheduled to commence sequentially from November 2013.
