A Hybrid Super Sports Car Achieving Incredible Fuel Efficiency!

Porsche AG has begun accepting reservations for the 918 Spyder, announced at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, and has also revealed its sales price.

Starting at $845,000 in the U.S.

The 918 Spyder, scheduled for release in 2013, is a new super sports car employing a plug-in hybrid system. While details of the engine are not fully disclosed, it is a high-revving V8 unit exceeding 4 liters, based on the engine found in the RS Spyder, mounted in a rear mid-ship configuration. It will produce over 500 hp (373 kW / 507 ps). The transmission is a 7-speed PDK, sending power to the rear wheels.

Two electric motors, one for each axle, deliver a combined output of 218 hp (163 kW / 221 ps).

The battery is a liquid-cooled lithium-ion unit, rechargeable from a standard household power outlet. Charging times vary by country and region, but a full charge can be achieved in 7 hours using a 110V/10A power source in the U.S. This can be further reduced with an optional rapid charging unit.

Performance figures include a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 3.1 seconds and a top speed of 320 km/h. Its Nürburgring Nordschleife lap time is under 7 minutes and 30 seconds, an improvement of more than 2 seconds over the Carrera GT.

CO2 Emissions of 70g/km!

However, such high performance is expected from a Porsche flagship. What's truly noteworthy is its environmental performance. Achieving 3.0 L/100km (33.3 km/L) in the European NEDC combined cycle and emitting just 70g/km of CO2, it sets astonishing figures not only for a super sports car but for any passenger vehicle. It is also capable of zero-emission driving, with an electric-only range of 25.7 km and a top speed of 151 km/h, meaning short trips might not require the engine at all.

The design faithfully replicates the 2010 show car, but this two-seater production model differs from the show car in its manually removable roof, which can be stored in the front luggage compartment. Production will commence on September 18, 2013, at the Zuffenhausen plant in Stuttgart. The highly anticipated price starts at $845,000 (approximately 68.5 million yen).
