MQB Platform Expands Interior Space
Volkswagen held the world premiere of the new compact minivan "Touran" (Japanese name "Golf Touran") at the Geneva Motor Show, which began on March 3rd. This is undoubtedly a full model change, and as can be seen from the shape and angle of the glass area, it is far beyond a minor facelift.
The completely revamped platform utilizes Volkswagen's MQB modular transverse matrix for its next generation. The chassis and body structure extensively employ high-tensile and ultra-high-tensile steel, resulting in a 62kg weight reduction and a 25 percent increase in static rigidity compared to the previous model.
While the overall length has increased by 130mm, 113mm of that is due to the extended wheelbase. The expanded cabin offers greater flexibility in seat layout, with a full-flat configuration now possible. The 5-seater version boasts a luggage capacity of 1,040 liters, addressing the desire of current owners for "a little more space."—A 7-seater configuration with a third row of seats is also available, replacing some of the cargo space.
One of the features strongly indicating its new generation is the infotainment system, adhering to next-generation standards. With standard "MirrorLink" equipment, it allows smartphone operation via the vehicle's display through "AppConnect," compatible with Apple's "CarPlay" and Google's "Android Auto."
The audio system uses Denmark's "DYNAUDIO." While sound quality is influenced by the amplifier's characteristics, it's worth noting that DYNAUDIO is one of the few brands that manufactures its speaker cones in-house.

Fuel Economy Improved by 19 Percent
The announced power units include six turbocharged direct-injection engines: 1.2 TSI (81kW/110ps), 1.4 TSI (110kW/150ps), and 1.8 TSI (132kW/180ps) gasoline engines, along with 1.6 TDI (81kW/110ps) and 2.0 TDI (110kW/150ps, 132kW/180ps) diesel engines. In addition to manual transmissions, a dual-clutch transmission (DSG) will also be available.
All models come standard with a stop-start system and a brake energy recovery system. Benefiting from the significantly lighter body, fuel economy has reportedly improved by up to 19 percent. The most fuel-efficient model is the 1.6 TDI paired with a 7-speed DSG, achieving a European test cycle fuel consumption of 4.1 L/100km (approximately 24.4 km/L). For gasoline models, the 1.4 TSI with a 7-speed DSG records 5.1 L/100km (approximately 19.6 km/L).
A key question regarding the new Touran is whether the diesel engine variants will be introduced to Japan. Two versions of the 2-liter engine are offered, both meeting Euro 6 emissions standards. With two balance shafts to reduce vibration, expectations are naturally high.
The advanced driver-assistance systems have also been revamped. These include "Front Assist with City Emergency Braking" to mitigate forward collisions, "ACC Adaptive Cruise Control" with stop-and-go functionality, "Multi Collision Brake" to bring the vehicle to a standstill and prevent secondary collisions, "Trailer Assist" to support reversing with a trailer, and "Side Assist with Rear Traffic Alert" which detects and warns of vehicles in blind spots. These systems ultimately intervene with braking and steering to maximize occupant safety.
The new Touran is scheduled for release in Europe in September. Currently, there is no official announcement regarding specifications or release dates for the Japanese market, but details are expected to be revealed in due course. The first-generation Touran, launched in 2003, has sold over 1.9 million units and has become a crucial model supporting Volkswagen's business. This full model change appears set to further solidify its position as a premium compact.
