Full-time 4WD Passat Alltrack Evolves to Second Generation

The Volkswagen Passat Alltrack is a derivative model based on the wagon version of the new Passat,Passatthe Passat Variant, finished as a crossover with a raised ride height, 4WD system, and a rugged exterior. Following the debut of the eighth-generation new Passat last July,Passat Enters Eighth Generationthis Alltrack has also been renewed. It made its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show.

The new generation, the second for the Passat Alltrack, adopts the modular "MQB" platform, similar to the Passat and Golf. To improve off-road capability, the overhangs have been shortened and the ride height increased by 27.5mm.

All models feature Volkswagen's "4MOTION" all-wheel-drive system. While primarily front-wheel drive for better fuel economy, the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system integrates Electronic Differential Lock (EDS) which activates the fifth-generation Haldex coupling to distribute torque to the rear wheels when the front wheels lose traction. Additionally, upper grades come standard with "XDS+" on both the front and rear axles, with it available as an option on other models. This system monitors the left and right wheels and applies light braking to the inner wheel during cornering to improve turn-in, a function known as torque vectoring.

The engine lineup consists of five variants, all compliant with the Euro 6 emissions standard and equipped with features such as the "Stop-Start" idling stop function and a brake energy regeneration system. The 1.4-liter four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline (TSI) engine comes in two outputs: 110kW (150ps) and 162kW (220ps). The 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged direct-injection diesel (TDI) engine is available in three different power outputs: 110kW (150ps), 140kW (190ps), and 176kW (240ps). The 150ps TSI and TDI models are paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, while the higher-grade models are equipped with a dual-clutch DSG transmission.

Dedicated Off-Road Driving Mode

As a feature unique to the Alltrack, designed with off-road driving in mind, a "Offroad" driving mode is available in addition to the "Eco," "Normal," "Sport," and "Individual" modes found in the base Passat. When this mode is selected, the transmission program, accelerator response, ABS behavior, and all driving assistance functions are configured for off-road driving.

Although opportunities may be limited in Japan, the new Alltrack offers enhanced towing assistance functions. Particularly for reversing while towing, which can be challenging, the "Innovative Trailer Assist" supports steering. The towing capacity is up to 2,200kg on a 12-degree slope for trailers with brakes (1,800kg for the 150ps TSI model).

While based on the recently redesigned Passat, the exterior features SUV-like styling, including bumpers with stainless steel underbody guards, dark gray plastic moldings extending from the wheel arches to the side sills, and silver roof rails with an oxidized coating, giving it the presence of a distinct model.

The interior is also exclusive to the Alltrack, mirroring the exterior. The comfort seats feature Alcantara with fabric accents in the center. Leather upholstery is available as an option.

In line with recent Volkswagen new model trends, various driver assistance systems are included. These include the all-digital instrument panel known as the Active Info Display, found in the Passat; a head-up display; rear-seat media control accessible via tablet; Front Assist to prevent lane departure; Emergency Assist for automatic stopping in emergencies; Traffic Jam Assist; and Rear Traffic Alert, which monitors the rear sides when reversing from parking spaces.

The infotainment system has also been updated with enhanced network capabilities. A total of five head units are available, including interfaces compatible with Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto.

The Passat Alltrack is scheduled to be launched in the European market from the end of September.
