V6 + Motor Plug-in Hybrid
The Volkswagen Cross Coupe GTE was presented as a prototype hybrid SUV at the Detroit show. Amidst a show buzzing with trucks and sports cars, the company's commitment to developing environmentally friendly vehicles for the next generation was particularly striking.
"GTE" has previouslyGolfandPassatbeen used as a sub-name for plug-in hybrid models. The Cross Coupe GTE, with its eye-catching, large 5-seater, 4-door body and prominent 22-inch wheels, follows suit. It is a plug-in hybrid powered by a powertrain that combines a 3.6-liter V6 gasoline engine with electric motors.
"We are extremely pleased to have received the US Car of the Year award from MotorTrend for both the Golf and Golf GTE in early 2015," said Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Group, in front of the assembled press. A commemorative sticker was proudly displayed on the hood of the Golfs lined up at the company's booth.
"Furthermore, we achieved a historic milestone in 2014, exceeding 10 million vehicles produced, a target originally set for 2018. We will continue to aim for further sales growth." Many readers may already be aware from reports in Japan, but as the group competes with Toyota Motor Corporation for the title of the world's largest automaker, Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of Volkswagen, expressed great joy over the company's strong performance.

Potential in the US Market
Perhaps Volkswagen attributes its success to its continuous development of environmentally friendly vehicles with good fuel economy and low CO2 emissions. The Cross Coupe GTE, finished in a subtle blue hue called Grand Pacific Glacier, is advertised to travel up to 32 km on electric power alone.
Meanwhile, the powertrain boasts a total output of 265 kW (360 hp), combining a 3.6-liter V6 engine producing 206 kW (280 hp) and 350 Nm with an electric motor. By leveraging the high torque of the electric motor, the vehicle can accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 6 seconds, despite its substantial size.
Volkswagen states, "We are proceeding with development with the aim of producing this mid-size SUV in the United States." Technology and innovation are always Volkswagen's benchmarks. Moving forward, the new developments from the VW Group, such as thee-Golf, Audi'se-tron, andPorsche's Plug-in Hybrid Modelsare expected to provide significant momentum for sales in 2015," Winterkorn stated with confidence. The concept model "CrossBlue," unveiled at the 2014 Detroit show, has progressed in its development, with production slated to begin at a US plant in 2016. The Cross Coupe GTE, with its simple yet powerful body lines, spacious interior, and comfortable cabin, also shows strong potential in the US market.
