The 207's Successor, the 208, is Unveiled

Peugeot's management has given its full endorsement to the 207's successor, the "208," calling it "the dawn of a new era," "a stepping stone to the next stage," and "a new icon." The vehicle has now been revealed.

A New Face Resembling the 508

"We wanted to achieve the seemingly contradictory goals of a compact body and a spacious interior," Peugeot states. In terms of dimensions, the new model is 7 centimeters shorter and 1 centimeter lower than the 207. The entry-level model weighs 975kg, a significant reduction from the 207's 1,210kg. Meanwhile, by raising the rear seats by 5 centimeters, the luggage space capacity has also been secured.

The exterior design, as hinted in the teaser movie, is remarkably simple, almost as if drawn with a single stroke. Yet, the lines on the bonnet and sides create a sculptural beauty. As rumored, the front fascia now resembles the 508, featuring headlights with a less aggressive angle, a compact front grille, and an emblem-less frame that highlights Peugeot's iconic lion.

Achieves Fuel Economy of 3.4 L/100km and CO2 Emissions of 87g/km

While few specific details have been revealed about the interior, it has been completely rethought to bring innovation, much like the exterior. The result is described as intuitive, concise, and focused on practicality. Notably, the 208 features a head-up display positioned above the instrument panel, allowing the driver to view information such as speed without diverting their gaze from the road ahead.

A total of five engine options are available. The most environmentally friendly among them is a diesel engine achieving a fuel economy of 3.4 L/100km and CO2 emissions of 87g/km. Three gasoline engines are offered, with the smallest, a 1.0-liter three-cylinder VTi, recording an excellent 4.3 L/100km fuel economy and 99g/km CO2 emissions. Peugeot attributes these results to "improvements in vehicle weight, aerodynamics, and the fruits of our extensive research into hybrid systems."

The 208 is scheduled to go on sale across Europe, beginning with its launch in the UK in the summer of 2012. It will be available in both 3-door and 5-door body styles. Pricing has yet to be announced.
