MINI has released the specifications for the new three- and four-cylinder gasoline engines that will power the third-generation MINI. This preview of the new MINI, set to be officially announced on November 18, suggests that the next-generation model can be expected to deliver significantly improved performance from these power units.
One of the newly developed engines for the third-generation MINI, which is nearing its official debut, is a 2-liter four-cylinder direct-injection TwinPower Turbo engine producing a maximum output of 141kW (192ps) and a peak torque of 280Nm (28.5kgm). With overboost, it can generate an impressive 300Nm (30.6kgm) of torque. The other engine, a 1.5-liter three-cylinder direct-injection TwinPower Turbo, boasts a maximum output of 100kW (136ps) and delivers 220Nm (22.4kgm) of peak torque from just 1,250rpm. Furthermore, with overboost, it can provide 230Nm (23.4kgm) of maximum torque.
This 2-liter engine is expected to be fitted in the Cooper S, while the 1.5-liter engine will replace the current Cooper's 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine.
The new MINI is also slated to feature electronic control dampers for the first time in a MINI. By electronically controlling the damper valves, the response to road imperfections can be adjusted according to the driver's preference. This allows for a choice between a sporty setting and a more balanced, comfortable ride.
A 1.5-liter three-cylinder diesel engine producing a maximum output of 85kW (116ps) and peak torque of 270Nm (27.5kgm) will also be available for the European market. Both the diesel and gasoline engines are said to offer improved fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions compared to current engines.
