This year'sParis Motor Showat thePorscheunveiled a concept car based on the "Panamera" nameplate, a sports wagon. While the current "Panamera S Hybrid" differs in both system and design, what is this concept car? Tatsuya Otani reports from the scene.

Unique Hybrid Prioritizes EV Mode

Porsche has debuted a concept car bearing the "Panamera" name, a sports wagon. The four-door body, based on the Panamera, features an extended roofline and a tailgate, combining the utility of a wagon with the sporty image of a coupe.

The body, measuring 4,950mm long, 1,990mm wide, and 1,401mm high, is 20mm shorter, 20mm lower, and 60mm wider than the existing Panamera. However, perhaps due to the excellent balance of its exterior design, it appears more compact than these dimensions suggest.

The cleaner appearance of the body is likely also due to the adoption of a system that eliminates conventional door mirrors, instead using video cameras integrated into the body-side air outlets to provide rearward visibility via in-cockpit displays.

Furthermore, LED technology is employed for the taillights, with a design that makes the "PORSCHE" lettering appear to float three-dimensionally within the garnish connecting the left and right taillights.

Another distinguishing feature of this model is its unique Porsche plug-in hybrid system, dubbed "e-hybrid."

The electric motor delivers a maximum output of 95 ps, approximately double that of the "Panamera S Hybrid" and "Cayenne S Hybrid." Combined with a 9.4 kWh lithium-ion battery, this system enables a top speed of around 130 km/h and a range of over 30 km in EV mode.

The front-mounted engine is a 3.0-liter V6 supercharged unit producing 333 ps. With the electric motor, the system's total maximum output reaches 416 ps, with a claimed 0-100 km/h acceleration in under 6 seconds. Meanwhile, fuel efficiency achieves approximately 28.6 km/l (according to European measurement methods), thanks in part to the plug-in hybrid system, with CO2 emissions a remarkably low 82 g/km.

The e-hybrid defaults to EV mode; engaging the hybrid mode, which combines the internal combustion engine, requires deactivating it via a switch on the steering wheel. Additionally, selecting the e-charge mode while in hybrid mode actively charges the lithium-ion battery, extending the EV mode's range.

Charging from an external power source is completed in a maximum of two and a half hours. The type of power source is noted only as "standard household AC power," with no specific voltage indicated.

At the Porsche booth at the Paris Salon, the "991" 911 all-wheel-drive model, the "Carrera 4"was also on display.
