Cylinder Deactivation and Engine Start/Stop Adopted
The Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4, Lamborghini's flagship and a leading presence in modern super sports cars, will finally gain engine start/stop and cylinder deactivation functions for its engine, it was revealed at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. At the same time, it appears that further customization options will be added to the 2013 model year "Aventador."
First, the start/stop function. While already a familiar feature in other brands, this is a supercar, after all. The V12 engine, like a fighting bull, restarts in a mere 180 milliseconds, a speed almost imperceptible to humans.
Next, the cylinder deactivation system. This system deactivates cylinders in one bank when the vehicle speed is below 135 km/h and the engine is under low load. In other words, the Aventador temporarily becomes equivalent to an inline-six engine. Of course, the determination of whether the engine is under low load or not is likely based on complex criteria such as oil temperature, but even when it becomes a six-cylinder, the deactivated cylinders will awaken with the slightest accelerator input.
While different from the similar technologies used by group companies Volkswagen andAudi, this seems to be a uniquely Lamborghini approach, yet it is remarkably effective in reducing environmental impact. Fuel economy has improved by 7 percent to 16 L/100 km (approx. 6.25 km/L), and CO2 emissions during high-speed cruising at around 130 km/h have reportedly decreased by about 20 percent.
Overall, CO2 emissions have been reduced from the previous 398 g/km to 370 g/km.
This 2013 version of the Aventador features not only engine improvements but also chassis refinements. Lamborghini claims that with stiffer springs and further optimized dampers, handling has become sharper and ride comfort dramatically improved. New wheel designs are also available.
Additionally, an option will be available to equip the front spoiler, air intakes, engine cover panels, engine cover, and interior with parts made from carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP).
