Nissan GT-R Spec V vs. Porsche Panamera Turbo (3)

This installment is a special "LONG TERM TEST" edition of the Nissan GT-R Spec V. We welcome the "Panamera Turbo," developed by Porsche as its fourth model following the 911, Boxster/Cayman, and Cayenne, as a special feature car. Though their body shapes differ, we report on these two cars, arguably the pinnacle of FR-based four-wheel-drive turbo models from Japan and Germany. The OPENERS automotive team shares their insights from the perspective of owners who use them daily.

— Conversely, did you find any areas for improvement in the Panamera?

Staff AThe instrument panel layout. Perhaps due to prioritizing design, the buttons are difficult to operate. From switching driving modes like "Sport" and "Normal" to the audio and climate control switches, they are arranged uniformly like piano keys, making blind operation impossible.

Staff BThe fully independent four-seater setup is also inconvenient in that it cannot accommodate five people.

Staff AThe Panamera's interior as a whole seems to prioritize design over practicality. Also, while the idling stop is good, the restart timing is slightly delayed, causing frustration. Given its excellent basic comfort, the lack of attention to detail is noticeable.

Staff BThe Panamera's engine characteristics are flat and easy to handle, and its ride comfort is good for such a high-performance car, so some people might desire more sporty stimulation. Many people likely feel that recent Porsches, including the 911 Carrera series, have become too much like "model students."

Conclusion: They Are Entirely Different Cars

— So, comparing the two cars?

Staff BTo put it bluntly, they are completely different cars, so ultimately it comes down to which one you prefer.

Staff AIncidentally, I noticed a few things when using the Panamera daily. First, the fuel economy is severe. In Tokyo's traffic conditions, it's about 4 km/l. Also, with a width of 1930mm, the number of usable parking spaces is quite limited. Perhaps because its main market is North America, it doesn't seem to be designed with Japanese traffic conditions in mind.

Staff BIndeed. The GT-R has good fundamental qualities, so I look forward to future refinements that will bring it closer to Porsche's comfort and quality.
