Hub Bolts That Significantly Enhance Ride Quality
We test-drove the "IS350 F SPORT." As Yoichi Mizuno, who oversees vehicle performance development, explains, "Lexus vehicles are broadly divided into F SPORT and others." The F SPORT features dedicated tires, dampers, and drivetrain control systems. The engine is a 3456cc V6 gasoline unit producing 234kW (318ps), paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels.
In this minor model change, the tread, which is the width between the left and right wheels, has been widened to improve cornering and other driving performance. The suspension settings suppress body roll during cornering while absorbing road imperfections during cruising, providing comfort.
What significantly enhances the ride quality are the hub bolts used at the mounting points of the road wheels. Previously, wheels were fastened to the hub using stud bolts and nuts. However, the IS adopts a hub bolt fastening structure for the first time in a Lexus. This not only increases rigidity but also achieves a reduction in unsprung weight. This is a major reason for the car's immediate and unified response when the steering wheel is turned.
When thinking of European sedans, one might consider Mercedes-Benz, BMW (and Alpina), Audi, as well as Volvo, Jaguar, and Alfa Romeo. Furthermore, in the premium segment, Porsche, Maserati, Bentley, and Rolls-Royce also produce excellent sedans.
Lexus stands among them, having clearly established a character that is enjoyable to drive, comfortable, and excels in areas like connectivity. The new IS feels like it was designed recently, despite being seven years since its debut. Setting aside the styling, if you desire a car that makes you feel youthful when driving, you'll find that most SUVs can't compete with the IS.
