Test drive the Maserati MC20: A versatile super sports car for everything from the circuit to resort | Maserati
Reviving the Tradition of Italian Sports Cars of Yesteryear
When a car is converted to an open-top, a significant weight increase is usually unavoidable. Thanks to the efforts of Maserati's engineers, the weight gain has been limited to just 65kg. With the center of gravity at the same height as the coupe, it seems that driving performance has not been sacrificed for style.
"Actually, due to the retractable roof, the overall height is slightly increased compared to the coupe. However, by meticulously crafting the lines from the windshield through the roof to the rear quarter panel, I believe the profile (side view) does not convey any sense of increased height."
Klaus Busse, a German who heads Maserati's design department and has worked on many FCA (then) vehicles, including Alfa Romeo, shared the highlights.
The aggressive front grille, positioned so low it seems to skim the ground, and the forward-leaning nose convey a sense of forward momentum. The body, measuring 4,669mm in length and 1,224mm in height, combined with the large 20-inch wheels, creates a sporty yet elegant impression, perhaps due to the clean lines.
"This car is certainly a sports model, but it is also a grand touring car. In essence, it is a model that recreates the tradition of Italian sports cars of yesteryear, capable of being driven from home to a race, like the Mille Miglia road race in the 1930s, and then driven back home."
CEO Grasso analyzed the character of the MC20 Cielo during a roundtable discussion with the media, which I also attended.
I actually drove the MC20 coupe, and my impression was one of surprising smoothness on the circuit. Everything felt effortless. Its ability to navigate high-speed, continuous corners with agility was truly impressive for a well-engineered sports car.
On the other hand, considering its ease of driving, the MC20 Cielo seems suitable for anything – whether it's a resort, shopping in the city, a round of golf, or a long trip.
Following this, an electric vehicle is planned as the third MC20 model. "This is the dawn of a new era," says CEO Grasso. But before that, I believe car enthusiasts should experience the Nettuno engine for themselves.
The price in Japan is expected to be 33.85 million yen, with deliveries scheduled to begin in early spring 2023.
