Improved Maneuverability and Versatility – Test Drive of the New Volkswagen Golf Variant | Volkswagen

Appreciating the Mild Hybrid System in the Golf

The "Golf Variant eTSI R-Line" featured here combines a 1497cc engine with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, producing a maximum output of 110 kW (150 ps) and a peak torque of 250 Nm. With its 1.5 times larger displacement, it offers impressive acceleration performance.
It is said that modern 1.5-liter engines now surpass the performance of 2-liter engines from a previous era, and this car is a prime example. While there's a slight dip in torque just before the engine reaches 2000 rpm, the exhilarating surge of power once it passes that point is remarkable.
Simultaneously, the new Golf Variant is becoming increasingly "smart," featuring an infotainment system with an integrated communication module that allows for remote door locking and unlocking via smartphone.
The "Travel Assist" driver assistance system functions as an all-speed, lane-centering system. Activated with a single button, it maintains a set distance from the vehicle ahead and keeps the car centered within its lane. It operates accurately and offers good usability, such as resuming the set speed after manual acceleration.
The "Variant eTSI R-Line" boasts a fuel economy of 17.0 km/L (WLTC), likely a benefit of the mild-hybrid system. The electric motor assists acceleration, reducing the need to press the accelerator pedal as deeply.
In Europe, mild-hybrid systems are considered crucial technology for meeting increasingly stringent CO2 emission regulations. It's commendable that Volkswagen has equipped the Golf with this technology, which is typically found in premium vehicles.
The prices range from the 1-liter "sTSI Active Basic" at 3.056 million yen, to the same engine in the "sTSI Active" at 3.265 million yen. Above these are the 1.5-liter "sTSI Style" at 3.846 million yen, and the "eTSI R-Line" featured here at 3.895 million yen.
