Test Drive: Renault Arkana – The Coupe SUV with an F1-Derived Hybrid System | Renault

Powerful and Surprisingly Quiet Performance, Just as Renault Boasts

Because it uses a geared transmission, there's no hesitation when accelerating at any speed. The appropriate gear is selected instantly. Acceleration is smooth even at high speeds, and fuel efficiency is excellent. "This system offers many advantages and is easy to maintain," explained a technical representative from Renault Japon at the Arkana test drive event.
The driving impression, as Renault boasts, is one of power, speed, and surprising quietness in all situations. While Nissan's e-Power (a series hybrid system that uses an engine to charge the drive battery), as seen in models like the Note, might have been considered during early development, the decision was made that this system was the best option for high-speed performance.
What I find appealing about the Arkana's hybrid system is its response during mid-range acceleration – for example, when cruising on the highway and suddenly pressing the accelerator. The Arkana instantly accelerates as it seamlessly shifts into a lower gear.
The engine's maximum output is 69kW with a torque of 148Nm, supplemented by the motor's 205Nm. While these aren't exceptionally high figures, the acceleration is more than adequate. It's not blisteringly fast, but the speed builds satisfyingly.
The suspension setup, while perhaps slightly firm at the front, does not compromise ride comfort. Even on uneven roads, it maintains good compliance, avoiding any unpleasant bouncing. The ride is smooth and comfortable. The rear seats are also spacious, clearly indicating its suitability for long journeys. It's a well-tuned setup, impressive for a European car.
The driver assistance systems are also comprehensive, including adaptive cruise control with stop & go, lane centering assist, active emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and a 360-degree camera, offering equipment comparable to Japanese cars.
The coupe-like cabin, with its gracefully curved roofline, appears compact, complemented by a body that emphasizes the presence of the wheels. It's not overly aggressive but doesn't fade into the background either. This is a car for car enthusiasts. Fuel economy is an astonishing 22.8 km/liter (WLTC). The price is 4.29 million yen.
