The New XJ: Supple Yet Agile Driving

Long Wheelbase Version Also Available
The new XJ, the first full model change since 2003, is equipped with a 5-liter direct-injection engine, touted as "the most advanced and powerful in Jaguar's history." Jaguar states that it fuses sporty driving performance with the finest interior space.
The body features an aluminum monocoque chassis, with fusion alloy, created by layering ultra-thin aluminum sheets, used for the front and rear fenders, and ultra-lightweight magnesium for the front end. This design emphasizes handling by achieving optimal front-to-rear weight balance. Simultaneously, it realizes a lightweight body that tops its segment class. The XJ Luxury weighs 1,850kg. This is a light figure for a car with a considerable length of 5,135mm.
The model lineup is broadly divided into two body types: a standard wheelbase with 3,030mm and a long wheelbase with 3,155mm. There are three engine options. The base is a 5-liter V8, available in a naturally aspirated version with 385ps, a supercharged version with 470ps, and an even more powerful supercharged version with 510ps, sometimes referred to as "hardcore."
The lineup is listed below.
Standard Wheelbase
・XJ Luxury (Naturally Aspirated) ¥10,000,000
・XJ Premium Luxury (Naturally Aspirated) ¥11,500,000
・XJ Portfolio (Naturally Aspirated) ¥13,200,000
・XJ Supersport (Supercharged, 510ps) ¥16,550,000
Long Wheelbase
・XJ Portfolio (Supercharged, 470ps) ¥16,000,000
・XJ Supersport (Supercharged, 510ps) ¥17,550,000
Jaguar Land Rover Japan, which handles sales, states that the marketing positioning will also change from previous models. Previously, the XJ occupied a segment that emphasized tradition and brand value, crowded with German competitors. However, the new XJ is moving away from that to a segment with stronger emphasis on advancement and sportiness, focusing on "brand character" (according to the head of marketing and PR in Japan). Competitors in this segment include,Maserati・Quattroporte, andBentleymodels such as the GT and Mercedes-Benz CLS.
Styling That Exudes Bold Individuality While Honoring Tradition
The styling of the new XJ is distinct from the designs of German cars, which have, to put it kindly, traditional proportions, or to put it bluntly, conservative proportions. In addition to the teardrop shape and the side window graphics that Ian Callum, head of design, describes as being pulled back, flowing lines are emphasized from the long roof to the short deck. This creates a remarkably bold individuality for a luxury saloon priced over 10 million yen.
The interior is also cited as a highlight of the new XJ. It features semi-aniline leather seats with a supple feel at the top, surrounded by wood trim, and modern controls called iTech, designed for intuitive operation. It's a fusion of traditional craftsmanship and an interface reminiscent of the latest personal computers. This is where its newness lies.

The New XJ: Supple Yet Agile Driving
Responsive Acceleration from a Standstill and Satisfying Mid-Range Performance
The model I test drove was the standard wheelbase version of the "XJ Portfolio" (13.2 million yen) equipped with the naturally aspirated engine producing 385ps. The exterior color was a mix of silver and gold called "Cashmere," paired with an "Oyster" white leather interior. At first glance, the large front grille and the aggressive headlights flanking it give it a decidedly sporty impression.
Settling into the driver's seat, the seats are snugly designed, enveloping the body. The limited headroom might be a tradition of the XJ, but the light from the two sunroofs enhances the airy feel. The prominent center tunnel provides a sense of being appropriately cocooned for the driver, as in previous XJ models.
Depending on the specification, the glossy interior panels and chrome accents on the controls exude a sense of presence. While the users of such a premium saloon are likely to be of a certain age, this design will appeal particularly to those who prefer modern aesthetics.
Pressing the start button, turning the cylindrical drive selector clockwise to select drive, and then pressing the accelerator pedal results in a remarkably brisk initial acceleration. While not violent, the engine, which produces a maximum torque of 515Nm at 3,500rpm, propels the car forward with a continuous surge of torque.
Mid-range acceleration is also swift, and combined with the suspension tuned for sporty performance with metal springs at the front, the steering response is direct. The rear wheels follow adeptly thanks to the air suspension, making high-speed lane changes feel light and agile. If you assume Jaguar is a leisurely saloon, you'll be surprised by its nimble handling.
The Sportier "Dynamic" Mode
The performance of the 5-liter V8 is already proven in the XK and XF. It offers abundant torque and excellent rotational characteristics, making it an engine that provides driving enjoyment. It pairs well with the XJ. The initial acceleration is brisk, and the acceleration when the accelerator pedal is depressed during driving is also more than satisfactory.
A drive control system is provided, and selecting "Dynamic" allows for a sportier driving experience. The button with a checkered flag motif near the gear selector activates this mode. In Dynamic mode, the digital instrument cluster, known as the virtual cluster, turns red. This alters the characteristics of engine output, shift timing, traction control, and adaptive dynamics. In Dynamic mode, the sporty character is more pronounced, leading to a more exhilarating drive.
Although supercharged engines were not available for this test drive, neither the "soft" nor "hard" versions, they are likely intended for those seeking "excess." For owners who enjoy being behind the wheel themselves, the naturally aspirated engine with the Dynamic mode is more than sufficient.
