Volkswagen Golf R | What Makes the R Truly Special Compared to the GTI?

What is the True Value of the R, Compared to the GTI?

Volkswagen Group Japan will launch the "R," its most powerful Golf, in March 2010. It features a 2-liter engine combined with an intercooled turbocharger, producing 256 horsepower. A full-time four-wheel-drive system is also a distinguishing feature. The "R" in the car's name, according to the company, stands for "Racing" or "Real Sport." Priced at 5.05 million yen, this addition means the Golf lineup now boasts two sporty models, alongside the already-released GTI.

Downsizing Concept for the "R" Too

The Volkswagen Golf R is the successor to the previous Golf R32. It arrives following a model change that has given it an image consistent with the sixth-generation Golf. Exterior highlights include a dedicated front grille, deeper air dams, a rear spoiler, and large-diameter tires with a 225/40 profile. It also features dedicated sports suspension, a dedicated braking system, and the Adaptive Chassis Control system (DCC). Inside, dedicated leather seats, a steering wheel with a unique design, and blue-needled gauges enhance the sense of exclusivity.

Another significant characteristic of the Golf R is its engine. In place of the Golf R32's previous 3.2-liter V6, this model adopts a 2-liter four-cylinder engine. This aligns with Volkswagen's push for its downsizing concept, which aims to improve fuel economy and reduce vehicle weight by decreasing displacement, while ensuring high performance through efficient engine combustion technology and, in some cases, forced induction (turbocharging).

Dedicated Suspension and Enlarged Disc Brakes

The Golf R's power unit has a 38% smaller displacement compared to the R32, yet its maximum output is increased by 6 horsepower to 256 ps. Simultaneously, maximum torque has increased by 10 Nm. The transmission is a 6-speed wet dual-clutch DSG, which enhances transmission efficiency, resulting in a claimed 22% improvement in fuel economy.

The dedicated sports suspension kit lowers the vehicle height by 25mm compared to the standard Golf. The dampers and springs are tuned for sporty ratios, and the stabilizer bars are thicker. Stopping power has also been enhanced to match the increased power, with larger disc brakes fitted front and rear.

A Mature Acceleration Feel

Upon driving, the initial impression is indeed powerful, thanks to the maximum torque being available across a wide range, from 2,400 to 5,500 rpm. The dual-clutch system engages quickly, though one might wish for even faster shifts. The 1,530kg four-door body accelerates with vigor.

However, what's perhaps surprising, and where the car's unique character emerges, is in its acceleration feel. Compared to the GTI, which also features a 2-liter turbocharged engine (211 ps), the R feels more mature, more subdued. Is this due to the "4MOTION" all-wheel-drive system? The power delivery is well-controlled. This kind of tuning is characteristic of Volkswagen, setting it apart from the explosive feel of hot hatches from Latin manufacturers like Renault or Fiat.

The GTI is Enjoyable for Daily Use

While the R is a "real sport" model, it's designed for a broad audience. It can be driven calmly, and its full-time four-wheel-drive system makes it suitable for those seeking stable high-speed performance. Furthermore, its limits are high, and the controllable chassis and handling settings provide a strong sense of security. However, if you're looking for a car enjoyable for daily use, the 3.66 million yen GTI is more than sufficient. Considering that the Scirocco R, launched simultaneously, offers a distinctly sporty feel that clearly separates it from the standard version, the Golf GTI remains the solid, dependable choice.
