A Joyful Union Between Driver and Car

That was my immediate thought upon driving the new Volkswagen Golf, launched in Japan on April 9, 2009. The first generation was unveiled in its home country in 1974, and this marks the sixth generation. In the interim, it has sold a remarkable 26 million units.

What's always impressive about the Golf is its unwavering concept: a five-adult hatchback. While there were periods where some models felt rather ordinary, perhaps built on inertia, the Golf evolved significantly starting with the fifth generation. Just as I was beginning to think, 'The Golf might really be that good,' this model change arrived. The sixth generation, upon driving it, is indeed something to be impressed by.

A Recap of the Sixth-Generation Golf: Two Models Form the Lineup

The Highline (¥3.12 million) features a 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine equipped with both a supercharger and a turbocharger, producing 160 horsepower.

The Comfortline (¥2.75 million) uses the same 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine, but with only a turbocharger, delivering 122 ps.

The transmission is Volkswagen's acclaimed DSG, utilizing two clutches, now with seven speeds. This is standard on both the Highline and Comfortline. A 4-door body and right-hand drive are also common.

If I were to highlight what I liked about the sixth-generation Golf, it would be, quite simply, how enjoyable it is as a car.

The steering is precise, and the sense of agility has further increased. Turn the wheel smoothly, and the car glides effortlessly in the intended direction. The feeling of unity between driver and car is delightful. The body's movements are nimble, and driving enthusiasts would surely give it high marks.
