Agile and Powerful Performance: The New GTI's Bold Statement with a Honeycomb Grille (1)

On September 21, 2010, Volkswagen Group Japan launched the sporty hatchback "Volkswagen Polo GTI" in Japan, equipped with a high-output 1.4-liter engine producing 179ps. Motoring journalist Fumio Ogawa took it for an immediate test drive.

Newly Equipped with "XDS" for a Tighter Sports Chassis

The Polo is a volume model positioned as a core offering for Volkswagen, with popular variants in Japan including the TSI Comfortline, which pairs a 1.2-liter engine with an intercooled turbocharger, and the CrossPolo with its raised ride height. The Polo GTI, added to this lineup, is a model that pursues driving enjoyment, living up to the GTI badge that signifies high performance.

The 1.4-liter engine in the Polo GTI is combined with an intercooled turbocharger, featuring dedicated tuning to achieve a high output of 179ps. The gearbox is a 7-speed DSG, a first for the Polo.

Furthermore, it features a dedicated sports chassis lowered by 15mm and is equipped with the electronic differential lock "XDS," a first for the Polo.

This "XDS" enables sportier cornering. When cornering at high speeds, it electronically adjusts brake pressure to prevent the inner wheel from spinning, thereby reducing understeer where the car tends to push wide.

Additional features include dedicated 17-inch alloy wheels, red brake calipers, and checkered sport seats, reminiscent of the Golf GTI, all contributing to its distinctive Polo GTI identity.

Powerful Performance Emanating from a Sharp Design

"The hallmark of the new generation Polo GTI is its efficiency. Compared to the previous generation with its 1780cc turbo engine, power is up 29 percent and torque by 14 percent, while fuel economy has improved by approximately 26 percent. The engine, designed to be lighter and more compact with a two-valve system, achieves power through boost while maintaining a smaller displacement, playing a significant role in this improvement," stated the PR department of Volkswagen Group Japan, the importer. "The impression of the exterior is one of sharp design, with a new generation front grille that echoes the Golf. The squinting rectangular headlights and the red line accentuating the grille enhance its special character. Furthermore, the large, lightweight, dedicated 17-inch wheels paired with 40-profile tires lend it an imposing presence."

Inside, the checkered fabric seats, a signature element of the Golf GTI, immediately catch the eye. These "Top Sport Seats," along with the leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters and the leather shift knob, are sporty appointments. Red stitching is found throughout, adding a touch of meticulous craftsmanship that enhances the atmosphere.

A Complete Car That Lives Up to the "GTI" Name

The driving sensation can be summed up as light and fast. With a vehicle weight of 1.2 tons, the 179ps maximum output and 250Nm of maximum torque, available from 2000rpm, deliver sharp acceleration accompanied by a robust exhaust note. Observing the tachometer, power builds noticeably from around 2800rpm and continues to accelerate without interruption. While the limits are unknown on public roads, the compact body, under 4 meters in length, provides a surprisingly brisk sense of increasing speed.

The steering feel is set to be light. Cornering performance is high, with neutral steering response, instilling confidence even at higher speeds. The suspension is firm, and perhaps due to the 215/40R17 tires, the ride is somewhat stiff. However, this is compensated by the enjoyment derived from steering inputs; the car reacts swiftly from the moment the wheel is turned, allowing for precise cornering as intended.

A Simple, User-Friendly Hot Hatch That Never Gets Old

Some Latin cars reveal a significant difference between the initial impression and the experience after prolonged driving. As you enjoy driving in various situations, the car's character emerges, leading to a deeper appreciation. The Polo GTI's initial impression is that of a perfectly realized car. This impression remains unshaken regardless of the driving scenarios encountered, which is truly commendable.

The 7-speed DSG also offers quick responses, reacting promptly to accelerator pedal inputs. This makes the car feel powerful and allows for effective use of the torque band. In automatic mode, the transmission downshifts for acceleration and employs other fine-tuned settings, ensuring the car's agility is not compromised.

While the seats and other interior elements might be considered simple, their quality extends beyond mere appearance to excellent actual comfort. The pronounced side bolsters of the seats provide firm support during cornering. The natural driving position, allowing for effortless operation, is a testament to its German origins and functional design philosophy.

Downsizing refers to reducing engine displacement and equipping it with a supercharger, such as a turbocharger.
Families whose children have left home, known as empty nesters, tend to seek cars that are easy to use in urban environments rather than unnecessarily large vehicles. The Polo GTI, with its striking speed beyond mere compactness, aligns well with such a market.

The four-door configuration is also practical. The demand for a car that balances functionality, sporty enjoyment, and a price under three million yen is hardly uncommon. The Polo GTI is an all-around hot hatch (a fast hatchback) for everyone.
