The Passat CC, Volkswagen's newly released four-door coupe. Automotive journalist Fumio Ogawa explores its appeal.

A Nimble Inline-4 and a Powerful V6

The Passat CC likely stands out in urban settings due to its styling. With generous dimensions of 4815mm in length (30mm longer than the Passat) and 1855mm in width (35mm wider), its height of 1425mm (a significant 50mm lower!) gives it a poised stance. The beautifully curved roofline, which can only be described as sleek, lends it a unique character. Design enthusiasts will be immediately drawn in by its exterior alone. The character line along the side of the body, which Volkswagen calls the "tornado line," adds a sense of dynamism to the overall impression.

A 2.0-liter inline-4 and a 3.6-liter V6. How different are their characters? According to Volkswagen Japan, "During journalist test drives, preferences seem to be divided among drivers," and indeed, upon driving them, each possesses its own distinct personality.

The 2.0-liter front-wheel-drive model is nimble and particularly appealing to those who enjoy revving the engine and driving assertively. The four-cylinder engine, combining direct gasoline injection with a turbocharger, produces 200 horsepower – more than enough for this car. Its lightness is likely due to its quick response, without any sluggishness, whether accelerating, braking, or turning the steering wheel.

The 3.6-liter V6 direct-injection engine, producing 299 horsepower, has already been introduced in Japan in the Passat Variant R36 and is popular for its ample torque, delivering strong power in response to accelerator input. It certainly leaves a powerful impression. The full-time four-wheel-drive system provides such straight-line stability that you feel secure with just a fingertip on the steering wheel, making it ideal for those who enjoy long-distance drives. Reduced wind noise also minimizes fatigue from sound. For Tokyo residents heading to Hakone or Chiba on weekends, the Passat CC would be an excellent choice.

The instrument panel features Vavona wood on the V6 4MOTION and brushed aluminum panels on the 2.0 TSI.

Sleek Exterior and Excellent Packaging Define the Passat CC

The interior is one of the key features of this four-door coupe. In fact, all luxury cars these days focus on creating a comfortable environment. The Passat CC excels first and foremost in its packaging, which refers to the interior dimensions. Not only do front occupants enjoy ample space, but two adults can also sit comfortably in the rear. This is a welcome surprise given the low roofline. Settling into the distinctively shaped rear seats, you'll find ample headroom and legroom between the front seats, providing a pleasant experience. The seats, designed with prominent horizontal contours, are visually appealing and inviting.

Had it not been for the Lehman shock, the Passat CC would likely have been a sensation on Wall Street. In these times, or perhaps precisely because of these times, if you desire something a little special, or wish to relax during your drive, isn't this an excellent choice?
