The Volkswagen Polo now has a "BlueGT" variant. Equipped with a downsized 1.4-liter four-cylinder TSI engine and incorporating the latest technologies, including cylinder deactivation called ACT, it achieves 21.3 km/liter in the JC08 mode, making it the most fuel-efficient in the Polo family. Yet, its maximum torque of 250 Nm is the same as the GTI. This BlueGT, which boasts both eco-friendliness and sportiness on paper,Overseas Test Drive Already Publishedbut with its domestic launch, Fumio Ogawa takes it for a spin on Japanese roads.

Volkswagen's Technology for Effortless Eco-Driving

An all-rounder that excels in both fuel efficiency and performance,The "Polo BlueGT" Arriveshas arrived.

The Volkswagen (VW) Polo, popular for its convenient size in urban driving, has seen its appeal further enhanced with the addition of a new model launched in Japan on September 10, 2013. This is the BlueGT. Described by Volkswagen Group Japan as "a model whose greatest feature is its combination of high driving performance and the best fuel economy in Polo history."

As the "BlueGT" sub-name suggests, this model has two key characteristics. Firstly, it employs VW's signature eco-driving technology, BlueMotion Technology, in its 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine. Secondly, it offers high dynamic performance thanks to a torque-rich turbocharged engine comparable to the GTI and a robust suspension system.

Technologically, a notable feature is the adoption of the Active Cylinder Management (ACT) 1.4 TSI engine, the same as in the new "Golf TSI Highline"Golf TSI Highline." This is what enables the fuel economy of 21.3 km/liter (JC08 mode). Behind this achievement lies a combination of technologies, including weight reduction in the engine and other components, as well as aerodynamic improvements to the body.

However, this does not negatively impact its handling. The turbocharged engine, which produces torque equivalent to a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine from 1,500 rpm and reaches a top speed of 210 km/h, defines the unique character of this new model, positioned between the conventional "Polo GTI" and "Polo TSI."

In a word, the driving impression is "natural" in the best sense. Despite the extensive use of fuel-saving technology, there's no sense of compromise. This is likely a testament to VW's advanced engineering, resulting in a car that's perfect for the current times. The price is 2.63 million yen, qualifying for a 75% eco-car tax reduction.

Subtle Design Touches and Features That Appeal to Owners

The Polo BlueGT is available in a dedicated color called "Blue Silk Metallic." Its appearance is surprisingly aggressive. With sports suspension, the ride height is 15mm lower than the TSI, and 17-inch wheels add to its imposing stance. The rear features a roof spoiler, similar to the GTI, and the diffuser-equipped bumper and dual exhaust pipes are also eye-catching.

The interior features sport seats combining Alcantara and fabric with blue accents. Opening the door creates an exciting atmosphere.

The leather-wrapped, three-spoke steering wheel with GT emblems, the leather-wrapped handbrake grip with gray stitching, and the shift knob—these details, where money has been thoughtfully spent, are sure to delight owners.

It's clear that the parts you interact with daily are crucial for a car you live with.

Thorough Fuel Efficiency Measures

The 1,394cc inline four-cylinder DOHC unit with an intercooled turbocharger produces a maximum output of 140 ps (103 kW) at 4,500-6,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 250 Nm (25.5 kgm) at 1,500-3,500 rpm. Key mechanical features, in addition to the cylinder deactivation system mentioned earlier, include weight reduction and improved efficiency.

The luxurious use of an aluminum die-cast crankcase achieves a 22kg weight reduction compared to previous engines of the same displacement. The crankshaft and connecting rods have also been redesigned for a 20-plus percent weight reduction. Furthermore, modifications to the exhaust manifold design have significantly improved thermal efficiency, contributing to better fuel economy.

An Unchanged Impression Once Underway

The driving impression does not disappoint the initial expectations. As the manufacturer claims, the engine is torque-rich, effortlessly propelling the compact 4-door body, which is less than 4 meters long. The 250 Nm of maximum torque is more than sufficient for this car, delivering surprising acceleration without needing to press the accelerator pedal hard. The steering feel is natural; the car responds promptly when turning slightly from the center position. This responsiveness is also a pleasure.

The handling of the Polo BlueGT is not demanding of the driver. It can be recommended even to those who consider themselves less experienced drivers. While a sports car might be too much initially, a car that reacts well to acceleration, braking, and steering is both relaxing and safe to drive. As the saying goes, the best car is one that fits you perfectly, and the Polo BlueGT feels like it could be that ideal partner.

The Polo BlueGT is a well-balanced car. True to its GT designation, the suspension holds its own firmly through corners. Although the steering feel is light, it maintains excellent contact with the road. This sensation is remarkable.

The steering wheel, with its intricate design where the grip diameter varies, isn't just about feel; it contributes to the car's ease of handling. Furthermore, the car's movements are smooth and easy to control. It seems enjoyable to drive on any road.

The ride comfort, on the other hand, is surprisingly good. For a sports suspension, it absorbs road imperfections well and suppresses jolts. The chassis and seats are likely well-engineered, but the quiet interior, with suppressed road noise, engine noise, and wind noise, makes it feel like a premium luxury car.

Volkswagen's Intentions Revealed in the Polo BlueGT

As mentioned earlier, the Polo BlueGT carries a price tag of 2.63 million yen, placing it in the same price range as the Toyota Prius in Japan. This suggests a deliberate strategy from the Volkswagen Group, which aims to become the world's number one automotive manufacturer in the near future.

After all, the Polo BlueGT achieves 21.3 km/liter (JC08 mode) in fuel efficiency. Previously, when introducing the new Golf, the company stated that "if you do a lot of highway driving, the gasoline engine's advantages come into play, and it can be more fuel-efficient than the Prius." This indicates their intention to dramatically reduce fuel consumption by effectively utilizing the cylinder deactivation system, which VW calls ACT.

Cylinders 2 and 3 are deactivated when the engine speed is between 1,400-4,000 rpm and the generated torque is between 25-100 Nm. According to VW, this range "covers almost 70 percent of the European driving cycle." The time required for cylinder deactivation and reactivation is said to be 13-36 milliseconds, and indeed, it was difficult to perceive the transition between four and two cylinders. It felt very natural.

The collision safety equipment includes ESP (Electronic Stability Program), ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), Brake Assist, Park Distance Control, and Optical Parking System. Notably, it is the only model in the Polo series to be equipped with cruise control.

The conclusion after driving it is that it's a well-executed car that is unlikely to disappoint anyone.
