The New 911: The Theme is "Stability"

The new 911 was unveiled on the eve of the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2018. Motor journalistTest drive report by Tatsuya OtaniFollowing that, in this second installment, we present an impression from motor journalist Tatsuya Kuwashima, who also owns the previous generation 997 model.

The 3.0-liter flat-six turbo boasts a maximum output of 450ps

The Porsche "911" is highly recognizable, even to those who aren't car enthusiasts. Every generation has its fans, who cherish them daily. It's been seven generations since the first model was unveiled in 1963. Now, with the arrival of the eighth generation, it's impossible to remain a passive observer.

The announcement was made with great fanfare on the eve of the LA Auto Show in November 2018, at the Porsche Performance Center in Los Angeles. And in January of this year, I finally had the opportunity to get behind the wheel. This was at the international media test drive event held in Valencia, Spain.

The test cars provided were the "Carrera S" and "Carrera 4S." Previously, the rear-wheel-drive models had a standard body, while the all-wheel-drive models had a wide body. A notable change in the latest model is that all versions, regardless of drive type, now feature a wide body. The engine is a 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six, producing a maximum output of 450ps, the same as the "GTS" version of the previous 991 generation.

What's unique is that while the platform and suspension have been revised for this full model change, significantly altering the front track width, the powertrain has seen only minor modifications. The engine's primary changes involve the optimization of auxiliary components, and while the gearbox has been revised with new gear ratios for its eight speeds, the fundamental logic of the PDK remains the same.

The reason for this becomes clear if we trace the history of the 911. The transmission changed from the Tiptronic S, based on an automatic, to the twin-clutch PDK during a minor change of the 997 model, and the switch from naturally aspirated to turbocharged engines also occurred during a minor change of the 991 model. In that sense, perhaps there will be some major surprises during the minor change of the new 992 model.
there might be.

Regardless, let me share my driving impressions of the Carrera S.

The first thing you notice when you start driving is the high body rigidity. I thought it was sufficient in the previous 991 model, but this time it feels even more solid and robust throughout the entire body. The sense of unity with the steering input is on par with a racing car.

Of course, the ride comfort is still maintained, and on smooth surfaces, it offers a flat ride. Even over bumps, while there's a distinct impact, it's absorbed in a single motion, so it's not an issue.

The stability at high speeds is likely a significant improvement over previous models. With the widened front track, you feel a greater sense of stability. This would be even more apparent if you compared it directly with the 991 model, and this stability might even reduce fatigue on long drives.

Yet, on winding roads, the front end smoothly and satisfyingly tucks into the corner in response to steering inputs. This level of dynamic performance is truly impressive.

Speaking of which, I should also mention that the front tires are now 20 inches and the rears are 21 inches. This is the first time in 911 history that staggered sizes are standard front and rear. Perhaps the development team adopted staggered tire sizes to enhance handling, compensating for the wider front track.

Wet performance significantly improved

Incidentally, I also had the opportunity to experience the car on a circuit, and the word "stability" came to mind again. The precision with which it traces high-speed corners is remarkable, and combined with the naturally controlled electronic systems, the driver can confidently apply throttle without hesitation.

The high braking performance goes without saying. Even under braking when entering a corner from a straight, the car's behavior is extremely stable. From gentle deceleration to strong, immediate braking, it delivers performance beyond expectations. It's a finish that Porsche owners will appreciate.

Furthermore, an important focus for the new model is the improvement in wet performance. The new wet mode, adopted for the first time on the 911, ensures stable driving on low-grip surfaces. Even if you brake too late, the rear end doesn't slide out.

Considering all this, perhaps the theme of the 992 generation is "stability." Of course, for users seeking a more thrilling drive, "wilder" models like the GT3 will likely appear in the future... In any case, even for me, an owner of the previous generation 997, the 992 has been crafted into a car that truly captures my interest.
