We test-drove the Volkswagen Passat Variant TDI Highline, equipped with Volkswagen's latest clean diesel engine. We examined its ride quality along with the feel of the Volkswagen diesel engine, which began running in Japan for the first time in 20 years.

2.0-liter 4-cylinder TDI engine with 190ps maximum output and 400Nm maximum torque

The 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine "TDI," added in February 2018 following the TSI (gasoline) and GTE (plug-in hybrid), is the "EA288" model, a core unit of the new-generation modular diesel system MDB, equipped with the latest diesel technology and exhaust purification system, unlike the previous generation that had issues with fraudulent practices in the Dieselgate scandal 2.5 years ago.

To address diesel challenges such as particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) in exhaust gas, it is fully equipped with measures including a common rail fuel injection system that directly injects diesel fuel at ultra-high pressure, a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter), an SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system that injects a urea solution "AdBlue" into the exhaust gas, and low-pressure/high-pressure dual EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) systems that recirculate exhaust gas back into the engine. It complies with the world's strictest European Euro 6 and Japanese Post New Long-Term emission regulations.

Volkswagen cites several reasons for introducing diesel models to the Japanese market at this time: the previous year's total import car sales exceeded 300,000 units, with clean diesel engine vehicles accounting for 20% (approximately 60 models including other manufacturers); a growing demand for diesel's economy and powerful performance; and the potential for internal combustion engines to evolve further in the future.

The test drive event was based at the "Flower Park Fujiya Hotel," located on a hill in the suburbs of Yamanashi City. The surrounding area offered moderate winding roads that weaved through endless vineyards, along with the Chuo Expressway, providing an ideal situation to test the new diesel engine model.

Interior and exterior that offer a sense of quality without being excessive

The test car was the Highline trim, the top grade for the TDI. Chrome strips around the lower body and framing the side windows in the image color Atlantic Blue Metallic, LED headlights, and 18-inch wheels all convey a sense of premium quality.

The body measures 4,775mm in length, 1,830mm in width, and 1,510mm in height, with a curb weight of 1,610kg. As it's indistinguishable from the standard model from the exterior, the TDI sticker on the body side, applied by the manufacturer, is a special item not found on regular models.

Opening the door, you are greeted by wood paneling on the dashboard and Nappa leather sport seats with heating, ventilation, and even massage functions, exuding a rich sense of quality.

The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster "Active Info Display" (optional on Highline) in front of the driver and the 9.2-inch infotainment system "Discover Pro" on the center of the dashboard both feature easy-to-read displays, allowing quick access to navigation, fuel economy, and various settings.

The horizontal cockpit design, free from excessive ornamentation and clutter, reflects Volkswagen's characteristic refined sensibility.

Capable on both winding roads and highways

A notable refinement of the latest diesel is the minimal shock when the engine starts upon pressing the button on the center console; it lacks the excessive body shake of previous diesel engines. While the sound may differ from a gasoline engine from the outside, the suppression of the characteristic diesel "clatter" is also a positive point. Once the door is closed and you're seated in the driver's seat, it's barely noticeable.

This engine, producing a maximum output of 190ps/3,500-4,000rpm and a maximum torque of 400Nm/1,900-3,300rpm, utilizes a turbocharger with variable guide vanes (a mechanism to control exhaust gas flow) to achieve efficient and optimal boost pressure regardless of engine speed. This allows you to experience the feeling of being in a strong torque band right from the start.

Previously, the loud diesel noise and the forceful torque were linked in my mind, but it's a slightly strange sensation to have that characteristic torque combined with a subdued running sound.

On winding roads, pressing the accelerator reveals that this is a "high-revving" diesel engine capable of reaching 5,000rpm beyond the red zone. We confirmed its sporty nature when using the paddle shifters of the 6-speed DSG in "Sport" mode, but that's not its primary purpose.

When accelerating slightly on straight roads, the steering feels stable and planted. It passes over road joints and bumps with a crisp "thump" without unsettling the body, truly giving you the feeling of "Ah, I'm driving a Volkswagen."

Cruising range of approximately 1,000 km expected

At 100 km/h, the engine speed is 1,600rpm, requiring only a slight pressure on the accelerator. Considering the 59-liter diesel fuel tank capacity and the fuel economy data (JC08 mode: 20.6 km/L), a cruising range of approximately 1,000 km is expected. In this context, the car seems perfectly suited for long-distance highway driving, loaded with people and luggage in its spacious front and rear seats and a massive 650-liter (1,780 liters maximum) luggage compartment, all while achieving excellent fuel efficiency.

Furthermore, by switching the meter display to ACC mode and activating Traffic Assist, you can easily confirm the vehicle's operating status and engage in automatic following, further reducing fatigue.

The AdBlue urea solution, used to chemically convert NOx into harmless nitrogen and water, is stored in a dedicated 13-liter tank located next to the diesel fuel filler. It requires replenishment at certain mileage intervals, with a consumption rate of 1.5-2.0 liters per 1,000 km. The remaining driving range can be viewed on the meter, and warnings are issued in four stages with audible alerts and visual indicators based on this range. The test car indicated it had 8,500 km of range remaining.

If you subscribe to the service pack, AdBlue can be replenished up to a total of 45 liters five times until the first vehicle inspection. Alternatively, you can purchase a 1.89-liter bottle and refill it yourself. Even with these considerations, the appeal of the TDI model, which uses diesel fuel, remains unchanged.

The price is slightly high at 5,099,000 yen (4,429,000 yen for Highline and Elegance Line), but it is well worth experiencing, not just for Volkswagen users seeking a larger size than the Golf. There must still be many users who consider imported cars offering elegant yet practical models like station wagons, in contrast to domestic manufacturers who now primarily offer minivans and SUVs.
