Test Drive: The Two-Wheel-Drive Tiguan

Late last year, at a more competitive price point,The two-wheel-drive Tiguan arrives in JapanThe Volkswagen Tiguan has arrived in Japan with a 1.4-liter model, significantly downsizing from the previous 2.0-liter four-wheel-drive version. Powered by a 1.4-liter turbo engine and equipped with "BlueMotion Technology"—comprising an idling stop system, regenerative braking, and coasting mode—it achieves even greater fuel efficiency. What kind of character does this two-wheel-drive Tiguan possess? A report by Fumio Ogawa.

A Two-Wheel-Drive Tiguan We Wished for Sooner in Japan

Volkswagen Group Japan launched the "Tiguan TSI BlueMotion Technology" as an addition to their lineup on November 20, 2012. This front-wheel-drive model, powered by a 1.4-liter turbo engine, emphasizes its low fuel consumption as a key selling point.

The Tiguan is a relatively compact SUV, measuring under 4.5 meters in length. In Japan, the model equipped with the "4MOTION" on-demand four-wheel-drive system was first released in September 2009.

This new front-wheel-drive variant retains the Tiguan's characteristic elevated seating position, spacious interior, and unique character distinct from sedans or hatchbacks, while pursuing enhanced efficiency.

In Europe and North America, four-wheel drive isn't always considered essential, even in regions with heavy snowfall. The prevailing idea is that as long as adequate ground clearance is maintained, a two-wheel-drive vehicle can fulfill its purpose. In this regard, the two-wheel-drive Tiguan is highly refined, and it's a model that Japan would have benefited from having available much earlier.

In a nutshell, it offers powerful performance that more than compensates for the smaller displacement, partly due to its 100kg lighter weight compared to the 2.0-liter 4WD model. Following the exterior minor change in February 2012, which enhanced its sharp image, it delivers agile driving and leaves a distinct, favorable impression.

Enjoyable to Drive

When searching for rivals to the Tiguan,BMW X1 (from ¥3,670,000)andAudi Q3 (¥4,090,000),MINI Crossover (¥2,672,000)as well asChevrolet Captiva (¥3,590,000),Jeep Patriot (¥2,580,000)come to mind among imported cars. The TSI BlueMotion Technology, with a starting price of ¥3,390,000, represents a clever pricing strategy when considering the interior craftsmanship.

Volkswagen is renowned for its exceptional build quality. The Tiguan, positioned as a mid-tier model in their lineup, impresses with its high level of refinement, from the way the doors open and close to the dashboard, door panels, and seats. Once accustomed to this, the quality of domestic Japanese cars can feel lacking. Since the mid-1990s, when Dr. Ferdinand Piëch, as the head of Volkswagen, mandated a company-wide improvement in quality, this bastion of delivering the highest value for money has remained unbreached to this day.

On the road, the 1.4 TSI BlueMotion Technology feels more agile and leaves a positive impression compared to the 2.0-liter 4WD model. The 1.4-liter engine delivers ample torque from 1,600 rpm, and despite the vehicle's not-so-light weight of 1.6 tons, there's no sense of inadequacy. While road noise intrusion is slightly noticeable, it soon fades into the background. Wind noise around the side windows is minimal.

Perhaps due to the engine's refinement, the setup that generates maximum torque of 240 Nm from 1,500 rpm is convincing, offering a substantial sense of power that is appealing. To fully appreciate the engine's capabilities (though it provides a perfectly pleasant driving experience on its own), selecting the S mode on the 6-speed DSG transmission is recommended. This delays upshifts, allowing you to enjoy the engine's "sweet spot" between 3,000 and 4,000 rpm, where it responds directly to throttle inputs.

Driving in S mode, combined with handling that belies the vehicle's height and weight, makes for a thoroughly enjoyable drive.
A slight increase in pressure on the accelerator pedal instantly prompts acceleration, and easing off results in prompt deceleration. The feeling of the car responding faithfully to the driver's intentions is thoroughly sporty.

This allows you to fully appreciate another of the Tiguan's virtues: its excellent engine and overall driving dynamics. While fuel economy isn't optimal in this mode, it's highly recommended for those who enjoy driving.

German Functionalism

The Tiguan's seats are a testament to Europe's long tradition in seating design. This contrasts with Japanese cars, which still seem to be emerging from a culture of simple chairs. While the cushioning is firm, the excellent support for the driver's body provides a sense of precise, well-structured seating.

The steering wheel has a slightly firm feel, but the suspension settings offer a smooth and composed ride at cruising speeds. Combined with the precise shift lever and controls, it embodies all the qualities one expects from German functionalism.

The roadholding is superb, and the steering requires minimal input around the center point to navigate corners. Its character is sportier than its high-riding stance might suggest. The 'S' in SUV stands for 'Sport,' and this vehicle truly embodies the original purpose of providing driving enjoyment.

A Powerful Hand

Finally, let's list the features of the updated Tiguan. In terms of fuel efficiency, it is equipped with systems aimed at further optimization, such as the start/stop system that halts the engine at traffic lights, a coasting mode that disengages the transmission from the engine when the accelerator is released at constant speed, and regenerative braking that generates electricity during deceleration.

While large SUVs were once popular in the market, the trend is now towards downsizing. Japanese manufacturers are creating various models for consumers seeking ecological benefits over off-road capability (provided by 4WD). Volkswagen believes it is meaningful to introduce a model that can directly compete with Japanese cars priced under ¥3,000,000.

This is how Volkswagen explains the rationale behind introducing the Tiguan TSI BlueMotion Technology to the Japanese market. With its quality, handling, sportiness, and a host of powerful advantages, this car reveals its true appeal once you experience it.
