When it Comes to Luxury and Performance, Britain Holds Its Own

The Jaguar XJ, Jaguar's flagship saloon, received its 2018 model year update in October. Among the lineup, the newly established "XJR575" grade boasts the most powerful specification in XJ history. Fumio Ogawa took this thrilling new model for a drive in Portugal.

Power and Handling Prowess

Jaguar's top-tier line,2018 XJ Series Unveiledhas been announced. While still an exceptionally luxurious car, the biggest highlight is the newly added "XJR575," the sportiest model in the range.

Jaguar provided an opportunity to drive the XJR575 in Portugal (timed with the launch of the XF Sportbrake).

This is the top performance model, replacing the previous XJR (550 hp), and its defining feature, as the name suggests, is the 5.0-liter V8 engine tuned to produce 575 ps.

The XJ is positioned above the "XF" as Jaguar's top model. It is available in a short-wheelbase version, seemingly for those who prefer to drive themselves, and a long-wheelbase version that places greater emphasis on rear-seat comfort.

At its core, it's a luxurious and comfortable large saloon. However, to think that's all there is to it would be a mistake. This is precisely where the XJR575 (available in the short-wheelbase version) proves exhilarating.

It is, simply put, fast. So fast, in fact, that one is compelled to write "fast" repeatedly (perhaps excessively). The manufacturer claims a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of just 4.4 seconds.

Driving it, you feel that this claim is undoubtedly true. A light press of the accelerator pedal sends the 1.8-ton body surging forward as if propelled. It's nothing short of exhilarating.

The XJ utilizes an aluminum structure, aiming to balance handling and fuel efficiency through weight reduction.

Portugal, with its mild climate, is often chosen by overseas manufacturers for their test drives. Its hilly terrain, likely due to the angle of the sun, is utilized for vineyards on the slopes.

Here, winding roads snake through the vineyards. The scenery is beautiful, and it's also a perfect setting for spirited driving.

Gripping the small, tactile steering wheel, I set the XJR575 in motion. The car responds nimbly with even the slightest turn.

During cornering, there is body roll, but it is expertly controlled. The outer front wheel dips slightly, and the opposite rear spring extends to maintain traction, following suit.

The Key to a Comfortable Ride: The Brakes

The engine is set to deliver peak torque at 3,500 rpm, meaning power builds progressively as the revs climb. While it feels powerful even at low RPMs, the surge of power truly kicks in above 2,500 rpm.

From the exit of one corner to the next, the car accelerates with a torrent of power. It clearly demonstrates the unique appeal of a heavy saloon with a powerful engine, distinct from that of a lightweight sports car.

Jaguar's engineers have clearly mastered the characteristics of this V8 engine, achieving a responsive feel and smooth power delivery all the way to the redline.

How much power is delivered for a given accelerator pedal input is crucial; the character of a car is often defined by its acceleration feel, which is intimately linked to human perception. The "feel" of this car is exceptional.

However, this enjoyment is only possible thanks to the highly effective brakes. The XJR575 excels in this regard as well. The braking performance is (as expected) strong, and pedal control is superb.

The ability to make subtle adjustments to deceleration contributes significantly to the enjoyment of driving on winding roads.

The car adeptly handles the acceleration from its immense power, and the brakes reliably slow the vehicle in proportion to pedal pressure.

Its handling, which rivals that of smaller sports saloons, is likely a result of its excellent acceleration combined with its powerful brakes.

Normally, even with its short wheelbase, this car, boasting a wheelbase exceeding three meters, should be capable of providing a relaxed ride for rear-seat passengers.

Noise is effectively suppressed in urban and highway driving, creating a serene environment. I tried the Meridian audio system, and it felt as though every note could be distinctly discerned.

I recall – though my memory may be hazy – that the company's policy was to create a sound that made you feel the musicians were present when your eyes were closed. The reproduction of chamber music, a genre at which Jaguar excels, was superb.

In essence, the XJR575 is a fighter with formidable power, yet possesses a refined spirit. That's the image it projects. It may be difficult to find rivals for a car like this.

The price in Japan is announced as 18.87 million yen. Right-hand drive models will be introduced (in fact, the test car in Portugal was right-hand drive). The car is scheduled to arrive in Japan in early 2018.
