The Car That Can Do It All
The new MINI Crossover, which has garnered attention for discontinuing gasoline engines in favor of a diesel and hybrid-only lineup, has been redesigned. Fumio Ogawa test drives the diesel model of the second-generation MINI Crossover, which has also grown in size.

New Crossover is Diesel Only
The MINI Crossover has undergone a full model change, with its Japanese launch in February 2017. Key features of the new model include its increased size and a consolidated diesel engine lineup.
The test drive was of the MINI Cooper D Crossover, equipped with the lower-output 110kW version of the two available 2-liter, four-cylinder diesel engines.
The powerful MINI Cooper SD Crossover is paired with the ALL4 full-time four-wheel-drive system. In contrast, the MINI Cooper D Crossover is available in both front-wheel drive and ALL4 configurations.
A plug-in hybrid model, combining a gasoline engine with an electric motor, will be introduced soon. Pure gasoline engine models have been discontinued (in Japan).
BMW Japan, the importer, attributes this bold strategy to market trends.
"The decision was made because 90% of previous MINI Crossover sales were diesel engine models," explained a spokesperson.
The overall impression inherits the strengths of the previous model. Notably, the styling, which sets it apart from its rivals in the market, remains strikingly eye-catching even in the new generation.
The styling technique of using all-black pillars has also been carried over. The roof, with its significant front-to-back length, appears to float above it.
The body size has increased by about one size. The length has increased by 195mm, the width by 30mm, and the height by 45mm.
It has a strong presence in the city. Yet, when viewed in isolation, perhaps due to its cohesive design, it even gives the impression of being a compact car.
That said, distinctive features like the unique grille exclusive to the MINI Cooper SD are impressive. Combined with a bumper unit featuring a large air dam extending downwards, it looks sporty.
The distinctive headlights are also composed of taut curves, showcasing the design department's skill in achieving diverse shapes within the constraints of the MINI brand.
Upon driving it, I strongly felt that the MINI had become new.

The Excellence of the New Generation Diesel Engine
The test drive was of the MINI Cooper D Crossover, a version with a detuned 110kW (150ps) 2-liter diesel engine.
Even with its restrained power, the maximum torque is 330Nm, which is more than sufficient numerically. The actual driving performance was also more than adequate for practical use.
What is most impressive is the quality of the new generation diesel engine. One of its strengths is the abundant power delivery from low RPMs.
The engine runs smoothly. As you press the accelerator, the torque builds satisfyingly, providing a genuine sense of exhilarating acceleration.
Another merit is the extremely low vibration and noise. There's no rattling or clattering whatsoever. Some might not even realize it's a diesel. It offers a refined quality.
The importer claims significantly improved fuel efficiency compared to the previous model. According to the manufacturer's figures, it achieves 21.3 km per liter. The real-world mileage is likely to be close to this.
Although the body has grown larger, it hasn't impacted the driving dynamics. The engine produces ample torque between 1,500 and 2,000 rpm. There's no hint of underpower.
Mid-range acceleration is also sharp. A light press of the accelerator is enough to comfortably lead the flow of traffic in the city. It truly lives up to its commitment to a diesel-only lineup.

The Car That Can Do It All
What made me feel this was a new generation MINI was the steering. It's similar to the MINI 5-door. In other words, the 'go-kart feeling' that MINI once emphasized has been toned down.
The car's response when turning the steering wheel from its neutral position is not as quick as in previous models. Body roll is also noticeable to some extent.
Those accustomed to MINIs might find this surprising. However, if the aim is to open the doors to people new to MINI, this 'softer' feel is certainly acceptable.
The increased body size has enhanced rear-seat comfort. Headroom and legroom have expanded considerably, improving the overall sense of comfort.
The luggage compartment capacity has also increased by 100 liters. An optional picnic bench is available, advertised as convenient for taking a break during outdoor excursions.
MINI once had a strong image as an urban car. The new Crossover's promotional photos feature scenes from the Nordic countryside. Both the car and its market strategy have evolved.
"Previous MINIs were positioned as secondary cars. But the new MINI Crossover is a car that can do it all."
This is how the importer explains the shift in positioning. Indeed, those who enjoy outdoor sports and opt for the full-time 4WD version can travel anywhere with their family throughout the year.
The price for the base model MINI Cooper D Crossover (front-wheel drive) is 3.86 million yen. The ALL4 version is 4.14 million yen. The powerful MINI Cooper SD Crossover ALL4 is 4.83 million yen.
