Test Drive: The New MINI Clubman

The One Car That Can Do It All for the Family

The "MINI Clubman" has been added as a model in the premium compact segment, one step above the premium small compact segment to which "MINI" belongs. Last month, Fumio Ogawa, a motoring journalist, test drove the new model, which was also introduced in Japan.

Function-Focused Packaging

The "MINI Clubman" is different from conventional MINIs. That's the claim from the importer, BMW Japan. The reason is its increased size. Of course, its most distinctive feature is the addition of four front-hinged doors. Market research indicates that many MINI owners own two cars, but the Clubman is emphasized as being capable of handling everything with just one car. Thus, it seems to be targeting a new market that conventional MINIs couldn't reach.

The new MINI Clubman lineup consists of two models: the "MINI Cooper Clubman" with a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine (¥3.44 million) and the "MINI Cooper S Clubman" with a 2-liter 4-cylinder engine (¥3.84 million). The most important aspect is its size; compared to the "MINI 5-door," it is 270mm longer and has a 105mm longer wheelbase. While its luggage capacity is more limited than the "MINI Crossover," it has its advantages. It can fit into multi-story car parks.

With a total length of 4270mm and a wheelbase of 2670mm, 105mm longer than the "MINI 5-door," the MINI Clubman offers ample interior space. MINI's concept has always been to provide a snug interior. With the MINI Clubman, the packaging has been revised to prioritize functionality. The rear seats offer ample legroom and headroom even for a 175cm tall person. The seat cushions are thick, and the backrests are high, providing good support. It should be comfortable for long drives.

In terms of usability, the 360-liter luggage capacity is a functional feature. The split rear hatch is not just a stylistic element; it's surprisingly practical. The smaller hatch size can make loading and unloading easier in tight spaces. It also features an automatic opening mechanism activated by foot movement.

The Cooper S also offered a satisfying drive.

A "Fun to Drive" Experience That Brings a Smile

We test drove the powerful MINI Cooper S Clubman. Its 2-liter 4-cylinder engine is a modular unit, sharing its base with the Cooper's 3-cylinder engine, with each cylinder displacing 500cc. Compared to the 1.5-liter Cooper, it boasts an additional 41kW of maximum output, reaching 141kW (192ps), and an extra 60Nm of maximum torque, totaling 280Nm. While the Cooper is equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission, the Cooper S features an 8-speed automatic.

Driving the Cooper S reveals it to be much more spirited and enjoyable than the numbers suggest. The maximum torque is available from a low 1,250rpm, providing strong initial acceleration. Furthermore, mid-range acceleration is also sharp. The "Performance Control" system, in particular, enhances the driving dynamics. The gear selector is in the neutral position for "Comfort." To the right is "Green" (eco mode), and to the left is "Sport." You can choose according to your preference.

The Sport mode further emphasizes the agility expected of the Cooper S. A light press of the accelerator pedal delivers exhilarating acceleration. The handling is straightforward. There's a slightly rubbery feel to the steering wheel when cornering, perhaps due to the bushings. Aside from that, it's controllable and offers a "fun to drive" experience that brings a smile to your face.

While the "Performance Control" is well-executed, the car's fundamental quality is excellent. Even in Comfort mode (or "Green" mode in the city), the handling is highly enjoyable. It doesn't feel overly focused on acceleration or have overly stiff suspension. The overall balance is superb. Perhaps the "Dynamic Damper Control" (a ¥77,000 option), which is advertised as "balancing sporty driving and comfort," was also fitted to the suspension of the model we tested. It truly felt like a car that could handle everything.

The styling is appealing. There's a reason for that.

The Sportiness Common to All MINIs

Distinguishing features of the MINI Cooper S Clubman include the blacked-out mesh grille and LED headlights. What it shares with the Cooper is its stylish profile when viewed from the side. The roof and body appear to taper slightly towards the rear. This eliminates the purely utilitarian feel of a station wagon, strongly conveying the image of an active driver's car. It's an appealing design.

It's no wonder they persist with the "go-kart feeling" of agile cornering. Although the MINI Clubman enters the premium compact segment, one step above its predecessors, its core product embodies the sportiness common to all MINIs.

The interior options are also extensive. The leather seats come in a good range of colors, and you can even choose cross-stitching. The ability to combine classic patterns and colors with modern, rounded shoulder-line seats is a unique charm of MINI.

The toggle-switch style starter and the large circular meter cluster are design elements shared with traditional MINIs. However, the meter displays information related to cutting-edge connectivity functions. You can use navigation, audio, and other in-car infotainment systems. There's a sense of modernity there as well.

Under normal driving conditions, the cabin is remarkably quiet. Noise transmitted from the road and engine bay is kept to a minimum, and wind noise is very low. You come to understand that "premium" compact doesn't just refer to size, but also to quality.

Although the Cooper S is typically a model that emphasizes sportiness, its overall impression is softened, resulting in a car that fulfills the manufacturer's intention of being suitable for a wide audience. Fuel economy is announced as 16.6 km/liter for the Cooper S and 17.1 km/liter for the Cooper (both JC08 mode). While real-world figures may not be as high, they are certainly not poor. It truly is a model that can handle anything for a family.
