Jaguar's Most Powerful and Fastest Ever: A Test Drive in Portugal (1)

Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2011, the XKR-S sits at the pinnacle of the XK series, hailed as the most powerful Jaguar in history. While retaining the luxury and elegance that Jaguars have always embodied, this model offers a glimpse into the brand's inherent sporting heritage. Motor journalist Yasuhiko Kawamura took it for a spin in Portugal.

The Pinnacle of the XK Series: A Symbol of Its True Nature

What are the world's leading sports car brands?

When asked this question, most people would likely think of names like Porsche, Ferrari, or Lamborghini. However, adding 'Jaguar' to that list might invite some debate. In fact, at this very mention, one can almost hear the unspoken chorus of voices saying, 'Jaguar? Isn't that just a maker of luxury sedans!'

Yet, consider the XK120 released after World War II, followed by the XK140 and 150, and of course, the E-Type, a globally acclaimed masterpiece that cemented this brand's reputation. It's no exaggeration to say that Jaguar has always been a brand intrinsically linked with sports cars. Furthermore, they once had a remarkable presence on the racing circuit. Models like the C-Type and its successor, the D-Type, born from the XK120, competed and triumphed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. For a time, Jaguar was inseparable from the world of circuit racing.

Indeed, particularly in Japan, perhaps due to past promotional efforts, many still perceive Jaguar as a 'formal saloon maker for gentlemen.' However, as mentioned earlier, its essence is far more dynamic and youthful. And the XKR-S, unveiled at this spring's Geneva Motor Show, is a creation that seems to symbolize this 'original Jaguar' character.

40 PS More Horsepower and 55 Nm More Torque Than the Base XKR

The fact that the XKR-S is a model developed based on the XKR is clear from its name. In reality, most of the mechanical components employed are the same as those in the XKR. While peak output has been increased by 40 PS and maximum torque by 55 Nm through computer tuning and exhaust system modifications, the fundamental specifications of the 5-liter V8 engine, aided by a Roots-type supercharger, remain unchanged.

The most significant difference compared to the XKR lies in the aura emanating from its exterior. Of course, the body color plays a major role, but when finished in hues like 'Italian Racing Red' or 'French Racing Blue,' reminiscent of past racing glories, the XKR-S presents an active image so striking that many would question, 'Is this really a Jaguar?'

An Exterior That Evokes a Racing Atmosphere

The front fascia exudes a far more aggressive presence than the XKR's, thanks to the long, horizontal twin air intakes at the front of the XK series' characteristic long hood, the vertical intakes on either side of the bumper, and the carbon fiber splitter. Meanwhile, the rear view is filled with a distinctly racing mood, attributed to the wing-type rear spoiler and the bumper design featuring a diffuser with two tailpipes on each side.

Incidentally, these unique exterior design elements also contribute to improved aerodynamic performance. Specifically, with a top speed of 300 km/h in mind, the design prioritizes stability at ultra-high speeds, resulting in a reported 25% reduction in lift.

Inside, the 'Performance front seats' upholstered in carbon leather, coordinated with the trim of the door panels, immediately catch the eye. While their design is fundamentally focused on providing excellent support, the inclusion of 16-way power adjustment and heating functions speaks volumes of its status as a world-class luxury brand.

A Roaring Sound That Conveys High Performance

Settling into those seats and pressing the pulsating start button, which glows with varying intensity like a heartbeat, ignites the 5-liter V8 unit. The immediate, powerful roar that fills the surroundings, unmistakably conveying high performance, is sure to excite any driving enthusiast. In an era where 'electrification of automobiles' is becoming commonplace, it's at moments like this that one might find themselves murmuring, 'After all, sports cars are about the sound!'

Selecting 'D' with the rotary dial selector on the center console, common to the latest Jaguars, and gently applying pressure to the accelerator pedal while releasing the brake, the XKR-S pulls away with a deep growl, yet without any hint of harshness or brutality. Moreover, despite its 20-inch wide tires and specially tuned suspension with 28% stiffer front springs, the ride quality is surprisingly supple.

Admittedly, the impact felt when encountering road imperfections is firm. However, the subsequent suspension movement is remarkably smooth, with no sense of friction-induced resistance. This is a moment that reveals the suspension's tuning isn't solely focused on outright speed.

High Power That Dispels an Elegant Image

The international test drive event for this model in Portugal included a program on a circuit specifically designed with challenging undulations. In such a setting, the XKR-S truly allowed us to experience its performance, living up to its designation as 'the most powerful and fastest production sports car in Jaguar's history.'

The steering wheel, finished in fine leather, provides a more intimate connection with the road than the base XKR coupe. This is likely due to the specially tuned suspension and the newly developed aluminum front knuckles, designed to increase rigidity. The new 20-inch wheels, which reduce unsprung weight by 4.8 kg, not only enhance comfort on public roads but also contribute to improved road tracking in these demanding conditions.

Despite its considerable length of approximately 4.8 meters, the agile and nimble handling it offers is truly impressive. Naturally, with its supercharged engine, there's no shortage of power, with a claimed 550 PS delivering immediate and substantial torque across the rev range.

Perhaps in Japan, the Jaguar brand has been overly emphasized for its 'elegant' image. The XKR-S serves as a potent reminder of the brand's inherent automotive philosophy and its considerable capabilities.
