High Off-Road Capability with 4XMOTION
The new Volkswagen Touaregis making waves with its hybrid model. However, the "Touareg V6" equipped with a V6 gasoline engine is also a truly enjoyable car. It represents a significant leap forward from the previous generation. If you're looking for a fun SUV, you should definitely take it for a spin.
While it may overlap with the section on the Touareg Hybrid, here is a list of the new Touareg lineup, which began sales in Japan on February 17, 2011.
• Touareg V6 (¥6.23 million) 3.6-liter V6 (equipped with 4XMOTION for more authentic off-road performance)
• Touareg Hybrid (¥8.98 million) 3-liter V6 supercharger + electric motor (equipped with 4MOTION using Torsen LSD, without differential lock)
Compared to the previous generation, the wheelbase has been extended by 50mm, and the body has grown slightly in length by 45mm, width by 15mm, and height by 10mm. On the other hand, the vehicle weight has been reduced by 70kg.
Improving environmental performance was a major challenge for the new Touareg. The V6 model also features a "Start/Stop System" that shuts off the engine at idle and a brake energy regeneration system. Volkswagen calls the combination of these two technologies "BlueMotion Technology," which significantly contributes to fuel efficiency.
Both the V6 and Hybrid are 4WD, but their drive systems differ. In short, the V6 is better suited for more authentic off-road driving. The 4XMOTION 4WD system features a transfer case with a reduction gear and a rear differential with an electronically controlled locking mechanism.
The Touareg V6 is equipped with 4XMOTION. Its maximum climbing ability is 45 degrees (31 degrees for the hybrid). With the optional air suspension system, the approach and departure angles can be increased to 30 degrees, enhancing off-road performance. Selecting "LOW" on the center console switch electrically locks the center differential. Furthermore, the Start/Stop system can be manually deactivated for off-road driving.
AT and Engine Settings that Balance Functionality and Comfort
However, as befits a vehicle designed to balance off-road functionality and comfort, the ride comfort on public roads is well-maintained. The 3.6-liter V6 engine's characteristics are particularly good. It offers ample torque from low RPMs and also revs smoothly to higher speeds. The 8-speed torque converter automatic transmission is set to achieve maximum speed in 6th gear, aiming to improve fuel economy at higher speeds. It shifts up early and smoothly, but without making the approximately 2.1-ton vehicle feel heavy; the setup even feels sporty. It doesn't feel like it's struggling to move a heavy body with its ample torque.
While the hybrid has 19-inch tires, the V6 comes standard with 18-inch tires. Perhaps due to this, the V6's body movement remains flat regardless of road conditions. Cruising on the highway, the responsive steering, agile engine, and supple suspension create a superb combination that makes you smile and think, "This is a great car."
I want to emphasize again that this is completely different from the impression of the previous Touareg.Porsche Cayenne's V6 model comes to mind as a rival. That car also has good handling, a powerful engine, and an overall agile feel. However, there is a price difference of 1.75 million yen. If that's a significant factor in your decision, the Touareg V6 will not disappoint.
