A Day with Cadillac for Noteworthy Creators—Escalade × Tomoyuki Tanaka & Yoichiro Maeda | Cadillac

Fashion to match the Escalade

Gazing at the clear Tokyo Bay, both men's conversation flowed easily, their voices filled with enthusiasm. Tanaka remarked with deep appreciation.
“The Cadillac Escalade truly feels like ‘pure entertainment from head to toe.’ From the AKG audio system and the curved large display we discussed, to the fine details like the rear seat memory function, there are intricate mechanisms, like a Hollywood movie production, designed to provide occupants with a wonderful experience. Yet, the large-displacement V8 engine and the expansive glass sunroof offer a bold sense of enjoyment. That American show-biz sensibility is incredibly appealing.” (Tanaka)
“For those of us who grew up immersed in American culture, including music and fashion, today's Cadillacs incorporate elements of European cars while evolving American luxury for a global audience. The Escalade truly possesses that entertainment value, a unique pleasure that I feel I've finally come to understand at my age.” (Maeda)
After leaving the highway and enjoying a smooth cruise on local roads, they eventually arrived at a sandy beach overlooking the Uraga Channel. Getting out of the car, Tanaka posed a question to Maeda.
A smile breaks out, captivated by the large V8 engine, characteristic of American SUVs.
“Wasn’t it difficult but fun to choose clothes that would match the Escalade?” (Tanaka)
“I understand. Continuing our previous discussion, despite being a full-size American SUV, there’s something about it that makes plain American casual wear look disappointing (slight chuckle).” (Maeda)
“Exactly. The Escalade has a certain snobbery, in a good way, so I felt military-style or all-black outfits wouldn't work.” (Tanaka)
Tanaka, who had previously worked in fashion magazines, confided this, and Maeda responded with a laugh.
“I struggled to figure out how to style it, and ended up with only American-made shoes, Nike Air Force 1s (laughs).” (Maeda)
“Ah, I opted for white Vans on my feet, paired with 1920s French tweed trousers with a crease, and a 1940s Burberry trench coat. Both are vintage but have a relaxed feel, so I thought they’d match today’s Escalade. The Vans are inspired by Serge Gainsbourg’s white Repettos.”
“Impressive. I also felt that overly baggy or minimalist fashion wouldn’t suit the Escalade. I wanted an outfit that felt timeless. As a result, I chose domestic brands. The pants are from early Nonnative, and the sweatshirt is from recent Jun Hashimoto. For outerwear, I went with a slightly more structured Tomorrowland pea coat, also from about 20 years ago.” (Maeda)
Fashion talk blossoms.
“I also considered a dark denim jacket, like a Levi’s 1st type. Thinking about what to wear with the new flagship Cadillac SUV is endlessly fun.” (Tanaka)
The Cadillac Escalade possesses a charm that can entertain two mature, creative individuals, sparking lively conversation.
