Beauty for a New Era
The long engine hood, short overhangs, and rearward-set seating position—these design elements create a silhouette that, indeed, embodies the traditional, elegant stance of BMW roadsters past. Yet, upon seeing the new Z4, one instantly perceives that it radiates 'beauty for a new era.'
The flowing curves, where concave and convex surfaces blend seamlessly, the shoulder line that dynamically sweeps from the front of the body and converges towards the rear, and the expansive engine hood above the wheel arches... The exterior, a reinterpretation of the traditional roadster silhouette into a modern form, achieves a unique presence where timelessness and originality are exquisitely intertwined.
For a roadster, the interior, exposed to countless gazes, is as crucial a factor as the exterior. The flow of the shoulder line is echoed within the door panels, and the emotional design of the driver-oriented instrument panel and center console evokes a sense of exhilaration, befitting a stylish roadster. Once settled into the driver's seat of the new Z4, one will readily understand that the same aesthetic sensibility that graces the exterior permeates the interior.
In Just 20 Seconds, It Transforms into a Sleek Coupe
One of the elements that makes the new Z4 a one-of-a-kind roadster is its fully automatic retractable hardtop. The two-part roof, constructed with a lightweight aluminum shell, can be opened or closed in a mere 20 seconds. When closed, it reveals a coupe style that possesses the same refined beauty as when open. Even if the clear blue sky suddenly turns moody, the cabin remains as comfortable as that of a coupe. It is truly a new generation of roadster, unbothered by the weather.
Two grades will be introduced in Japan: the 'BMW Z4 sDrive35i' and the 'BMW Z4 sDrive23i'. The former is equipped with a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder DOHC engine with a parallel twin-turbocharger (maximum output 225kW/5800rpm, maximum torque 400Nm/1300-5000rpm), while the latter features a 2.5-liter inline six-cylinder DOHC engine (maximum output 150kW/6300rpm, maximum torque 250Nm/2750-3000rpm). Both offer the agile and refined driving experience characteristic of BMW, while also boasting high environmental performance for the 21st century.
Incidentally, the 'BMW Z4 sDrive35i' is available with a '7-speed DCT' sport automatic transmission with double-clutch technology. By effectively utilizing two clutches, gear changes can be made without interrupting power transmission, achieving a combination of automatic transmission comfort and the agile shifting of a manual transmission, along with high fuel efficiency. The advanced nature of the new Z4 is not solely expressed in its design.
The new Z4 masterfully fuses the universal appeal inherited from BMW's roadster lineage with the innovation of a latest model. This fusion is evident in everything from its interior and exterior design to its driving performance. There is no doubt that this car will broaden the horizons of sports cars and roadsters.
