A West Coast Summer Gathering for Car Enthusiasts
For over a decade, I've found myself drawn to Monterey, California, in mid-August. This is where the weekend known as "Monterey Weekend" awaits, arguably the most captivating weekend in the world for car enthusiasts.
Throughout this weekend, a variety of classic car events are concentrated in and around Monterey. Among the most prominent are the "Motorsports Gathering" held at the luxurious Quail Lodge resort, the "Concorso Italiano" at the Laguna Seca Golf Course, the "Monterey Sports Car Reunion" spanning three days at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, and the "Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance," with its main stage on the 18th hole of Pebble Beach Golf Links, a course widely known among golf fans for hosting the U.S. Open. These four events are the pillars of the weekend.
Beyond these major events, numerous other gatherings of varying scales take place. As night falls, attention turns to the high-stakes auctions conducted by some of the world's leading auctioneers.
Both the Motorsports Gathering and Concorso Italiano are held on Friday, but their atmospheres are vastly different. The Motorsports Gathering, which has rapidly gained recognition in recent years as the most exclusive event of Monterey Weekend, originally focused on race cars tied to motorsport history, as its name suggests. However, it now features special makes and models, leading to a diverse array of vehicles brought by entrants.
This year,Porsche 911andLamborghini's 50th Anniversaryand Aston Martin's 100th anniversary were featured, drawing significant attention.

Just 3,000 Admission Passes
A key reason for the exclusive atmosphere at the Motorsports Gathering is the limited number of admission passes sold to the public, capped at around 3,000. With a face value exceeding $400, these passes often command a premium, with fervent fans willing to bid over $1,000 on auction sites to secure them.
For automotive manufacturers, this event also holds significant importance for sales promotion. It has become common for concept cars and new models from premium brands to make their world premieres here.
This year,BMWunveiled theM4 Conceptfor the first time, while Bugatti presented a limited edition of the "Veyron 16.4" named after a legendary driver. Porsche also showcased the production specification of the "918 Spyder," a car ready for road use.Bugattialso brought a limited edition of theVeyron 16.4,andPorschealso brought the918 Spyder's production specificationin a road-legal configuration.
Meanwhile, the Concorso Italiano, also scheduled for Friday, is the most casual event of Monterey Weekend. While Italian brands are naturally the stars, a key feature is that not only classic cars but also the latest current models are eligible to enter.
Lamborghini's 50th anniversary was, of course, a significant theme this year at the Concorso Italiano, and a tour for Lamborghini entrants was held the following Saturday. For fans who wish to casually enjoy the charm of Italian brands, spending a day in California here would be a worthwhile plan.
As the name "Concorso" (competition) suggests, the main events here are the prize-giving ceremonies held for each make.
Models that pass the judges' inspection for condition and history are led to the main stage to be showcased before the guests. For enthusiasts, listening to the commentary while admiring the actual vehicles is a valuable experience.

Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Chevrolet Corvette
The Monterey Sports Car Reunion, held from Friday to Sunday at Laguna Seca Raceway, is not a track day but a racing event for historic racing cars. With classes divided by era, displacement, or racing category, it offers incredibly exciting races for spectators. Simultaneously, this event also delights us each year with various featured cars.
This year, a class dedicated to the Chevrolet Corvette, an icon of American sports cars celebrating its 60th anniversary, was featured. Chevrolet itself displayed a range of vehicles in the infield, from the first generation to thelatest seventh-generation Corvette, along with various racing models and rare concept cars crucial to the Corvette's history, such as the Stingray Racer. This display was a major talking point.
The participating cars, divided into a total of 16 classes, compete in two races after qualifying. Between races, various promotional runs are also conducted.
The most anticipated sight this year was the C7R, a racing car based on the seventh-generation Corvette that Chevrolet aims to deploy in the 2014 season. Although the body was covered in camouflage, obscuring its details, the audience's reaction made it clear that high expectations are already being placed on its performance.

A Parade of Rare Classic Cars on the 18th Hole
Concluding Monterey Weekend is the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, the world's most prestigious concours event, now in its 63rd year. While the unveiling of the latest models and concept cars has become a recent tradition here, the true stars are the rare classic cars lined up on the 18th hole overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Aston Martin andLamborghiniand Porsche 911 were featured makes and models, as at other events. However, what truly captured the envious gaze of enthusiasts worldwide was the gathering of 28 Alfa Romeo 8C models, arguably the most successful car in pre-war Grand Prix racing alongside the Bugatti Type 35.BugattiType 35, and the gathering of 28 Alfa Romeo 8C models, arguably the most successful car in pre-war Grand Prix racing.
The history of the 8C, which triumphed three times in the Mille Miglia and Targa Florio, four times in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and secured victories on numerous circuits for Alfa Romeo, is known to every enthusiast. Assembling such a number of models, each with a significant history, is a testament to the status of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.
Next year's Monterey Weekend is scheduled for August 15-17. During this period, Monterey and its surroundings become intensely crowded with entrants and guests, making hotel reservations quite challenging. Nevertheless, the trip is well worth the effort.
After all, for car enthusiasts, there is no more captivating weekend to be found anywhere else in the world.
