The Evolution of the 911──The 996, 997, and 991 Generations

This marks the final installment of our report on the 50th anniversary of the Porsche 911. The first water-cooled 911,the "996 generation", andthe "997 generation", are reviewed.the latest "991 generation". Yasuhisa Shimashita discusses the evolution of the 911 based on these experiences.

The First Water-Cooled 911—The 996 Generation

While the Type 996 might feel like a current or recent model, its debut was in 1997, meaning 16 years have passed. This signifies that one-third of the 911's history has occurred since the adoption of water-cooling.

Not only was the engine water-cooled, but for the first time in its long history, the body structure was completely redesigned. The Type 996 evolved into a modern sports car, both in appearance and substance. At the time, its fervent fans did not necessarily welcome this evolution. However, it is also true that the Type 996 successfully attracted new fans, and sales figures indeed surged.

I was at the wheel of a late-model "911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet." Compared to models before the Type 993, the sense of mechanical density, or perhaps a concentrated character, is undeniably diminished. The change in body structure, in particular, seemed to amplify this tendency in the cabriolet.

Yet, driving it again now, it's also true that I strongly felt it was unmistakably a 911. My memory from that time held an image of a more refined ride, or to put it bluntly, a more car-like feel. But as I drove, I realized, "Was it this sporty before?"

It was clear that this was a model that continued directly from its predecessors.

The Dual-Clutch Transmission PDK is Born—The 997 Generation

The Type 997 debuted in 2004 and remained in production until 2010. The headlights, which had not been well-received, returned to the traditional round shape. Performance was significantly enhanced with the adoption of the PASM electronic active suspension system and the 3.8-liter engine in the Carrera S, leading to further success.

Furthermore, in 2009, major improvements were made, including the integration of the direct-injection engine developed for the subsequent Type 991 and the PDK dual-clutch gearbox.

The Unceasing Evolution of the 911

On this day, I was offered a "911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet" from the early production run. Compared to the Type 996, the body's rigidity had improved more than I expected. However, I was surprised to find that even this Type 997 felt distinctly of its time when switching from the latest Type 991, which accompanied me throughout the tour. It was a stark reminder of the 911's continuous evolution.

Over 840,000 Porsche 911s have been produced. For 50 years, this car has consistently evolved. While undeniably inheriting the same DNA, it has been reborn year after year into something superior to its predecessor. It is this accumulation of history that has elevated the 911 to legendary status.

Exploring Porsche's Classics

Porsche operates a magnificent museum and has long maintained a division dedicated to the maintenance, restoration, and parts supply for its classic models, known as Porsche Classic. This reflects their clear understanding of the value these vehicles hold.

During this trip, I had the opportunity to visit the factory. The sight of dozens of "959s" being serviced or awaiting their turn in storage, alongside "356s" and "911s," was truly breathtaking. They understand well that the sight of classic 911s in running condition enhances the brand value of the latest 911.

This event can be understood in a similar context.

Nevertheless, I was humbled by how readily the steering wheels of these valuable classic models, worthy of museum display, were entrusted to participants, even if they were members of the press.

After all, many of the journalists present were from emerging countries who had no connection to the 911 during the air-cooled era.

As expected, there were a few vehicles that encountered issues with their gear shifts afterward. However, for Porsche, these were simply matters to be fixed, and the value of this event far outweighed such concerns.

Thanks to this, I was able to have a truly wonderful experience.

Coming to Japan

As mentioned at the beginning, the "911 World Tour" is being held worldwide, and of course, it will come to Japan.

On October 20th, an event will take place at the Fuji Speedway, host to the WEC (World Endurance Championship), featuring the exhibition of a 1967 911 that has traveled the globe, among other attractions.
