A Sports Car for the Couple's Next Stage

Stephen Bayley, a British design critic and former curator at the Design Museum in London, wrote the acclaimed book "Sex, Drink and Fast Car" (1986), centered around cars. It's one of my favorite books. The protagonist's friend, over 40, reflects on his life and states, "When it comes down to it, what do I want to prioritize in life? It’s surprisingly simple," listing the three things that make up the book's title.

There are, of course, many ways to enjoy a car. Outings with family, heading to a hobby sport... One might say there are as many ways to enjoy a car as there are owners. Among them, the Porsche "718 Cayman" is exceptional. It truly teaches us the profound joy of life that comes with a fast car.

While some may see it as the 911's little sister, the 911 fundamentally maintains a 2+2 layout, offering a reasonable degree of practicality. The 718 Cayman was announced in September 2016. As the name "718" revives the name of a pure sports car previously handled by Porsche, its roots lie in sportiness. Along with the name change from the previous Cayman, the engine has been updated to a highly efficient and powerful 4-cylinder turbo. The agile movement, like athletic shoes when turning the steering wheel, remains, and the brisk acceleration, which makes one wonder if this is what a flying carpet with a turbo would feel like, has been further refined.

The friend mentioned by Bayley was reflecting on life's pleasures after 40, which might be the perfect time to enrich one's lifestyle for the next stage. Cars have various functions like comfort and convenience, but this is an excellent moment to savor the fundamental appeal of the driving experience. While there are other stylish and sporty cars, when it comes to truly experiencing the joy of driving, there are few models that surpass the 718 Cayman.

The concept seems to be a suggestion for starting a life with a sports car, the 718 Cayman, as a couple. It's a proposal not for stoic solo driving, but for enjoying a life with a sports car together with a partner.

The movie, subtitled "Adults Begin to Drive," features a couple. In a restaurant at a design hotel in Atami, a travel destination, the husband surprises the wife with a gift. When she opens the box, she finds the keys to a 718 Cayman. It's a message from the husband, who has been driving together with his wife, to make their future life richer and more enjoyable with this car, and the wife, accepting the proposal, beams with joy.

For that reason, I also believe that couples driving sports cars is a wonderful thing. As is often seen in Europe and America, pursuing life's pleasures is truly cool. There are many pleasures in life: a nice house, vacations, champagne, fine dining, sports, cigars, classical music, instrumental performances, theater, collecting old books, and so on.

Anyone with a hobby will likely agree, but life has value because there are things to enjoy. I don't have many hobbies, but I believe I understand the joy of owning a real sports car. Waking up a little early in the morning to go out together. That's a first-class pleasure. When you're driving, your spirits lift, and the conversation flows. Is the passenger seat boring? No, it's a prime seat for enjoying that precious time.

After all, "sport" means enjoyment, recreation, and diversion. Wouldn't you want to savor that in a first-class manner? It's actually not that difficult. All you need to do is acquire the real sports car, the 718 Cayman.
